I just bought deus vault expansion for crusader kings and downloaded the latest patch, but can't get it to install. I run the .exe file but it says excel file not found. please help

Deus Vult is not a stand alone expansion. You also need the original game, Crusader Kings.
Do you have Crusader Kings ?
If you have CK, then did you install DV on top of CK ?
I've had CK for some time and just bought DV from gamersgate and installed over CK. The game launches but shuts down as it starts to load the scenario. I can open the patch with winzip but I can't install.
To install the patch you need to extract the files into your main Crusader Kings folder.
When exactly does your game crash ? Maybe this thread is helpfull
