I really really really want to get into an EU game, I got the paradox pack for a silly price oin steam months ago so I have most of their grand strategy games, I have tried EUII and HOI III, but however long I try to stick with them I always go off them. This is because I guess I don't understand how to play them properly and so I am unable to explore the depth of the things. I have installed Rome and am trying to play as Egypt, although right from the off, even though I've tried to make sense of the strategy guide you get access to by registering. I am really interested in playing as the leader of an ancient civilisation and really micromanaging, but I'm not sure what i'm doing. What do you guys suggest? Is there say a weekly checklist for running your country or something? Or do you think I should start as a tribe to get the hang of the beast?

Cheers!

Hi Noakesy, welcome to the forum and EURome.

I am also a beginner, so I am not so sure how worthwhile my tips may be. But I guess it's a good idea to start with a strong country. Tribes seem to do easily...

If you choose a republic, I could recommend Cheexsta's unofficial guide, which is really good. Some parts may be slightly obsolete because some features slightly changed with the new patch.

Enjoy, it's a great game.

Right started my game, I need to appoint a civic minister? I know the man I want (Has Finesse 9!!) And I have the tech tab up and can see the empty slot, but cannot see how it's done.

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Some very general stuff. I'm a lazy player so this is how I handle some of the game mechanics. I set up my trade networks at the start. I only adjust every now and then (new province or if I really want to maximise inputs to a particular province), I check the character screens about once a year task (again unless something comes up or I know I'm walking a tightrope around a potential Civil War)

specifically about your civic minister - does he already have a job (army/fleet/something), if so you may need to take that off him before you can appoint.

Strongly suggest wandering over to read some AARs, that may also give you some ideas on gameplay etc

The best way to learn the game is using a medium sized faction (something like 2 - 4 regions) and with no powerful enemies right at your side. I can't say which would be the perfect nation because I have played Epigoni mod for a long long time now and it adds so much to the game that I don't even remember how the original was :p but that's what you should be aiming to: Medium sized faction + no strong enemies close.

The problem using a powerful faction right away is that you will probably don't understand anything and you'll get brutally overwhelmed by the game, which leads to a feeling like "I just played this for an hour and I have no clue of what have I done". It happened to me the first time and it's happening right now with EU:III.

If you use a one province faction the first time your problem will be that you'll feel limited pretty much at the first 5 minutes of game.
Anyway, if you plan on doing that, your first priority should be getting iron or wood, creating archers / heavy infantry and annexing the weakest neighbors you have. Then, with a 2 province country you will slowly learn the game. Wish you luck!

Sorry, I meant "die easily" - not do easily. Any barbarian horde may crush you easily, and as a tribe, the risk is also higher because most tribes have lots of barbarian provinces near them.
