The program loads normally up to the main screen, but when I try to acess the "single player" button I get the warning that says the program has suffered an unexpected error. I've tried to uninstall it using the techniques described elsewhere, and I've tried to get it to stop crashing using the other sugesstions, but neither works. How on Earth would I fix it?

Well not nameing what you have tried already, I will first give you my standard tips.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

anything else?

yeah, I already tried that, and I got the same problems.

When you shut your virus protection down and then tried it, did you get the error code 271815?

I have my computer up and running 24/7 and I experience a complete crash to desktop every 5-6 hour when playing HOI2.

That really has nothing to do with the problem at hand, if you wish help with your problem please start your own thread and we will look at it there.

no, I didn't get an error code.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

I have started having the same problem. I am using the the second patch and it worked fine for a couple of days then all of a sudden the game crashes every time I press the single player button on the start up. DXDIAG results below:
