I have looked quite a bit for somesort of Naval Primer for CORE... I've seen alot of talking... but little in the way of education. So I have some questions.

With the 1:1 system what is a 'normal' fleet going to look like? In Vanillia my fleets normally went something like:

(Taken from the Wiki Naval Guide)

CFT

4 CV
3-4 CL
3-4 DD
1-2 SS

SAG

6 BB or CA
3 CL
3 DD

ASW
6 DD
6 CL or CA

Basically I tried to stay around 12 unless I was going with a Marine Amphibious Force.

Since in Vanillia the 'groups' are representative of what, 4 ships, should these totals be increased basically by a factor of 4? Is the AI building this way? Is a 48 Ship force 'normal'?

And what about a good ol' fashioned 'wolfpack'... how many is right? Is a stack of 30 SS 'normal'?

I know the ship have a lot more 'nuance' in CORE, but I'm looking for some general tips.

Thanks in advance.

well the navy commanders can command limits have been changed to

# Naval Leader Command Limit (nr of ships), Rank 0 (highest)
100
# Naval Leader Command Limit (nr of ships), Rank 1
75
# Naval Leader Command Limit (nr of ships), Rank 2
30
# Naval Leader Command Limit (nr of ships), Rank 3 (lowest)
10

so large fleet will have about 100 ships, so you can kinda figure it by that. :)

 THAT"S A WHOLE FRIGGIN LOT! If anyone ever get's around to having 3 uber fleets, they've pretty much won against britain.

30 SS would be excessive - 10-12 would be a "realistic" wolf pack for such use.

The main rule is to add some extra destroyers (for anti-sub protection) and probabaly Lt Cruisers as well (for AA cover, mainly) to your fleets - the number of capital ships satsy the same.

Or, if you wanna be a super cheater, just build 100 submarines :D

Why would you add subs to a carrier task force? I know they do it with modern CVBGs, but I don't think they did it - nor was there reason to - back then.

I was under the impression that the japaneese during WWII had submarines co-operating with their surface groups. Can anyone confirm?

IJN submarines were used in the course of naval battles mainly in mopping up
damaged or fleeing allied vessels. Many times capital ships were finished off by Japanese subs such as the Yorktown after Midway. Rarely did the IJN utilize subs as convoy interdiction (or raiding) during their operational timeframe. From the attack on Pearl Harbor with mini subs to the proposed plan of using aircraft carrying supersized subs to destroy the panama canal Japanese subs were used offensivley rather than German or US subs which were used as convoy raiders.
so to answer your question they were used indepedently for offensive operations but were generally involved in large naval battles for taking out the unexpecting large ships afterward

Thanks for your reply Bullfrog.

Does it mean that they were part of the surface fleet (under the same command) or that they just cooperated from time to time and otherwise operated independently?

I, like you, am such a dork, and love to recreate historical forces. Trying hard this time as Japan to not look everything up and become a slave within the historical frame, but can’t help myself from some historical references.

Sure, no problem.
I would say that no they were generally not used in the same command as the surface fleet, because the slow speed of the massive Japanese subs would have created problems with complicated manuevers and their many task forces, which the IJN used almost to a degree of self inflicting failure.
Their subs were used in cooperation with the fleet, often attacking heavily defended capital ships to no avail.
