Although the concept of natural parks only began materializing after the game’s end date with Yellowstone in 1872.

The idea of nature reserves. Sacred lands. Forbidden lands. Hunting grounds.

Basically a place that must remain “wild” and “unexploited” by humans has existed since civilization.

Now. I’m not proposing some radical game mechanic.

I just think it could be neat if there was some way to “lock in” a location on rural and get some culture or prestige boost from it.

I don't think it's fair to lock certain locations from upgrading, but I suppose I agree that some significant locations of the sort that you mentioned could be given passive modifiers for values such as national prestige, tolerance of the true faith or something (if a sacred site), local nobility satisfaction (if locations with wild game that were historically known to be hunting grounds) or reduced pop migration speed (if considered forbidden lands for the nation's primary culture or faith e.g. Kaala Pani for North Indian Hindu pops)

Not right now, though. Probably a decent idea for post-release flavour

For China, the most suitable areas are the tombs of emperors, such as the Ming Tombs, the Mausoleum of Purple Mountain, the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, and some virgin forests, such as Shennongjia.
Then there are those areas with the concept of holy land, such as Mount Tai, Laojun Mountain and Wudang Mountain.
