question about editing saved game files.

So I'm not sure if this would be considered modding the game. But how do you edit a saved game file. I'm playing a game of thrones mod and I want to edit my saved game file. I tried to open it how I would normally for my ck2 saved games with visual studio, or text editor. But it didn't work. Why is this? What can be done so I can edit my saved game? For reference I'm on a mac. Anybody knows please help me.

Why shouldn't the saved files be saved to icloud? *first part was when i tried to open the file wihtout unzipping it. why do we have to unzip it now? seems kind of BS. to be honest.

1. Save as a manual save (can't be autosave)
2. backup/copy the save you want to edit
3. Open the backup/copy of your .ck3 save file with a mac version of 7zip/winzip/winrar
4. Extract the gamestate file
5. Open the gamestate file with text editor, edit things carefully, & save.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been busy. But why do I have to unzip the file? How do I unzip the file on my mac? I tried to do a simple extract/unzip with 7zip on my mac it didn't work.
