hey guys,
i read on a youtube comment that regarding naval battles the ships are kind of broken and it doesnt really matter if you bring in heavys, so he tended to just build the least expensive ship and was doing well.
is that true? or are you guys building heavy ships too?

5 Ports in a province is lot so i don't build heavy (plus it need traditions).
The wall to build is simply not worth the money/military_exp.

I only do Tier 3 ports and build hexeres with liburns on flanks

It's a bit more complicated.
Liburnians are essentially free.
Once you have more than 15 of your own ships and a decent general, you can set the fleet to "hunt pirates" and "boarding tactics" - they will always win against pirates and you get a few free Liburnians from each pirate fleet.

A pure Liburnian fleet sure might not always win, but they do surprisingly often due to their extreme maneuver value as long as they have superior numbers. Which they'll often have due to being "free".

Theoretically, throwing stacks of Liburnians against heavier ships is very cost-ineffective. But this problem only matters if you actually paid for them.

Even if you'd pay for all ships, heavier ships would still not be worth the opportunity cost of trading for wood and having 3-5 levels of harbors.

In my current Rome game my fleet consists of 18 Hex 60 Tri and 40 lil set to naval envelopment (octopus)

I believe hexamerne (however you spell it) are considered heavy ships and only require a level 3 port and no trade.

You certainly don't need heavy ships, but it does help to reduce losses, especially when fighting against other large navies. Sheer numbers and a good commander will win every time regardless.

I've found that making at least 6 Hex wh when fighting carthage is very useful for getting naval dominance, if they have a decent navy.

I like navies, and heavy ships have some nice abilities: they can capture port provinces and destroy fort levels. I personally build mostly light and heavy ships - medium die too fast for my taste. Heavies aren't a priority though, I usually get them in the lategame (600+ AUC)

In theory you can just use the cheap ships., when you are not about to fight naval battles. When you have the same size , AI will not attack even with better ships. and you can use the ships as transport.
