On Friday I wanted to play HoI2, but I couldn't join any game.
I started fiddling with my router, but with no success (and I haven't touched the router anyway since the Friday before, when I was still able to join games).

Then I realized that the trouble started after I installed Office 2003 last Monday: Suddenly I could not use active ftp anymore. At that time I didn't feel like doing anything about it, so I switched to passive ftp.

I did a rollback to my Sunday configuration, and active ftp worked again. I assume HoI 2 MP would have also worked, but I didn't test it.
Unfortunately I was to lazy to reinstall Office, and decided to do another roll-rollback to my latest configuration to find the problem manually. Of course Murphy's law struck - there wasn't enough diskspace available anymore, the roll-rollback got stuck in between and it took me the whole Saturday to get the system working again.

The problem is still there - it seems certain programs get blocked from incoming traffic. I have the WindowsXP build in firewall disabled and didn't change the router (on my notebook everything still runs fine).

Does anyone know what could be the cause of the problem?

a solution doesn't jump out at me from just the info you have given me, but i'll keep thinking

heres some ideas that might "fix" the problems

1. configure the port-forwarding in your router for HoI 2 if you haven't already

2. if you cant get the port forwarding working right try the DMZ option in the router (you find your compupter's IP and then put it as the DMZ ip and enable it) - its under Advanced Options usually

3. disconnect the router and play without one when you want to play HoI 2

4. check if you have received any "auto-updates" from Microsoft lately in the Contral Panal/Remove Software thing, they are usually at the bottom of the list
-4a. take the Autoupdate Service off "automatic" in services. google the numbers of the windows fixes with "router problems" or something like that b/c it could be the update that messed something up
-4b. take the Autoupdate Service off, uninstall the last couple and restart :p

5. update router firmware

6. Format

also you should post what router you have and what windows version (home or professional) you are using

Thanks.

It has nothing to do with the router. If I boot Linux on the computer active ftp works. Same after doing the rollback to the Sunday configuration (what I cannot fo anymore, see first post)..

Formating is not an option, so I'll probably have to live with the problem until I can find an solution.

also if someone else uses the computer they might have found other firewalls in other locations and turned them on :D

to play cnc generals with my dad i had to find and turn off like 3 firewalls he had up

I ended up formating the harddisk and reinstalling WinXP.
