What is the multiplayer even for? I have attempted to use it but I think i need some sort of password.

Multiplayer is for playing multiplayer. Either you connect with others using your own server or - better - go to valkyrienet and use that as the base for your game.
There are always lots in the offing for you to join, but do not if you can't play regularly and be reliable.
Multiplayer is the best form of the game.
You go in multiplayer sub-forum. You try to sign in a game and each week you play the game with 8-10 others people. Very funny.
