Has anyone as Germany used the Atlantis Class Raiders or Pocket BBs succesfully for raiding. If so, what were your results, and what happened to the ships. I'm playing Germany and have a serial run of 4 Atlantis Class raiders to be ready by 1941 along with Bismark and Tirpitz.
Thanks,
David

I've never had anything get sunk by a raider.

I didn't send out the pocket battleships, cause the way the game works. Every capital ship has to be escorted or it's a sitting duck, and escorts, even CL's, have crappy ranges.

Hi,

During testing I tried a historical raiding strategy with the PB. Sent them down to the South Atlantic before the war started and they picked off Convoys slowly but surely. They didn't really end up getting engaged while raiding, but IIRC there was one lost returning to GER at the end of a patrol. Didn't get a chance to really test the HSK units fully. Feedback appreciated.

I never built any raiders, just used the ones given by event. In roughly 3 years of convoy raiding, they didn't sink anything. I lost 4 of the 7 raiders, usually when an Allied fleet located an Italian fleet in the same sea zone and sucked my raider into combat.

The naval engine really makes 90% of the ships available to you completely worthless. I doubt the modders can fix that.

Hi,

Considering that the Aux Cruiser has a 9 Convoy Attack they should be getting some kills. This may be related to them being Transport units rather than proper combat units. We're switching them out of the Transport file to the Nuclear Submarine file for 0.40 and we'll have to monitor them to see if they become more effective there. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the feedback, did anyone ever try raiding with Bismarck or Tirpitz?
I'm thinking of doing that and have a flotilla of Bismarck and Scharnhost supported by a wing of Navy Bombers.

I tried using the Orion(?)-class raiders as Germany with very little success. I deployed them on convoy raiding missions in the south Atlantic, around the mouth of the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and around Ceylon and India with never a single convoy sunk or even sighted. I thought for sure there would be supply convoys coming out of Kuwait.

Hi,

Yes, I think something about them being a TP unit must have them bugged for raiding. The loactions cited should have generated some kills. The implementation with them as TP has been there for a long time and I just assumed it worked. For 0.30 we adjusted the stats a bit and added the event driven HSK units for GER. So now people are actually using them as raiders and we see the problem. Should hopefully work better in 0.40 with them switched to the Nuclear Submarine file.

The prob with raiding by Kuwait is that supply can flow in from the Israel area across Iraq or thru India (once Persia is puppeted) so no convoys would go thru that area. Cutting of India is tough unless you can seal of the Med (i.e. must have Gibraltar, Suez won't do it because of Tel Aviv and that area). The game poorly simulates the problems of overland supply and the efficiencies of seaborne supply.

Some Success

I grouped the event-given raiders in groups of 3 and sent them up by Canada, they did have some kills now and then but would get hammered if caught in a fight. Must use the spotter/blockade runner traits with them. I would never build any though; too slow and their non-screenship status makes them solo hunters at best. In retrospect, it would be nice to reclassify them as destroyers not subs to use them as screens with, say, the PB's.

I do sometimes use my main fleet to raid off cape finisterre with NAV's as cover and have very good results with them, just make sure you don't overlook an engagement with UK carriers or you might lose a few capital ships.

Hi,

It is WAD that the HSK units aren'y screens. Historically these vessels operated independently and were no match for anything larger than a DD when in combat. So mking them useful as Screens wouldn't be matching the RW employment of these ships. What I'd say is we need to do is make them more productive as single ship raiding platforms. Then they can be useful for raiding their historical hunting areas in the South Atlantic & Idian Oceans.

Since you are talking about 0.40... When will it come out?
Next year sometime, is my expectation - it isn't even in testing yet, but it is under development. Rather than release half-finished projects, we run them through several rounds of Beta Testing to hopefully find the major problems, though invariably there are unusual situations that slip through and get found once a new version gets released to the general public.

It will be a long fall... ;)

Cap ships should be useful as raiders as well, the problem i find is the AI just sails up a carrier fleet and trashes it in no time. Seems very easy for the AI to find raiding ships, whereas IIRC it took the UK a long time to find german cap ship raiders.

Hi,

I think it depends where you are raiding. I deployed all 3 PB units to the South Atlantic and never had any contact with enemy fleet units until they tried to go back to Germany. If you are raiding in the North atlantic this may be more of a problem.

Hi fellas,

Been around HOI forever (check my sig), loved HOI1, loved CORE for HOI1, loved HOI2 and have enjoyed DD/ARMA. Played MP and SP and enjoyed it all. I say all that to say I am a HUGE fan.

Nevertheless, the incredibly slow pace of development on CORE for HOI2 will kill it, IMHO. I understand it's a lot of work, and I understand that I am not a contributor. But at this rate we'll be seeing 0.9 in 2013 or so. (Not kidding - do the math.) By then, we will have moved on.

I applaud all your work. Just a comment on reality. My suggestion would be to tone down your expectations for the sake of relevance. Just my two cents.

We know things move slowly.. but rather than say (for example) "0.40 will be out by Xmas 2007".. and then have to delay it.. we'd rather say "0.40 will be out in early 2008 or so".. and then if things go well, and it appears early, that is a bonus, rather than a disappointment.

Plus, 0.40 should be a pretty major advance, with new AI that should be a lot better, for one thing. So we are hopeful it will be a pretty darn tootin' game. We aren't necessarily saying that version 1.00 will be the ultimate - each version is playable, it's just that we then think what things we can add on, and so move to the next version, which we then hope will be even better.
