I did an f12+columbus and noticed, among other things:

I didn't know slaves were a commodity in EU..but I guess it is historically accurate...

The AI colonizes the richest provinces it can find, but that leads to a patchwork... Catalunya has colonized Venice, Kosovo, and Aleppo but 1/3 of the Iberian peninsula is unclaimed. The Mughyals have colonized almost all of Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf, but Pakistan is empty.

Why are my "relations" with some nations at +0, and others at -200??? I have yet to meet any other nation.

Why can't I see the entire map?

How does one colonize an island?

Has anyone colonized Tahiti or (insert remote island of choice here?) How did you avoid mass fleet attrition?

(1) I'll observe that from your other posts, it's clear that you are playing the Fantasia scenario. That has (if I recall correctly) a lot in common with other more "Civilized" games, in that you are expanding into mostly empty territory. This is very different from any other EU scenario, and a lot of your post only makes sense for Fantasia...

(1b) Regarding the "patchwork" nature of colonization, in a "normal" EU scenario, the colonizers do a pretty good job of at least getting trade posts into most of the obvious places and in less of a patchwork. (Though the AI is still not great at it.)

(2) You don't have to know where the nation is to be making it mad. For one thing, relations steadily decline if you have set very low tolerance towards their religion. They may also go down every time you compete away one of their merchants from a COT. And of course, in some scenarios, your starting relations may be "set" to a historically appropriate level.

(3) Not sure what you mean about seeing the entire map. There is permanent terra incognita in many places -- that is, areas that cannot be explored or unveiled because the designers didn't feel it appropriate for the 1492-1792 historical period. For example, the interior of Africa. There is temporary terra incognita in many scenarios which you must send an explorer or conquistador to uncover (or a sufficiently high-tech army or navy unit). And there is the "fog of war" option, which limits which units on the map may be seen.

(4) How does colonizing an island differ from colonizing any other province? (It doesn't :p ) It must no longer be terra incognita, you must have a colonist available, and enough ducats to pay for it.

(5) Some of the more remote islands can be problematic to reach. I've posted at length about how to squeeze out every last drop of explorer efficiency [post=2949335]here[/post] but the short answer is don't try to reach the island all in one voyage.
