Ok, the game has been crashing/freezing up on me since I bought the game and even after patching to 1.2

It's random, and not set to any particular date or anything. As a matter of fact, it has frozen up so many times that I got a corrupted Windows cfg file out of the deal from giving it the finger of death since I can't do jack after it freezes.

Any ideas on getting this game to work properly???

Edit: I went back and changed the multisampling to 0 and no trees, and still got the freeze (the settings file I have uploaded does not reflect this though).

Please try updating your video driver http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_175.16_whql.html

Also can you tell us whether the crashes ever happen soon after you start your machine, or only after you've been playing for a while? What temperature your CPU and video run at? If you have no way of getting that info, Google for and install SPEEDFAN.

New drivers installed and I still get the freeze. I can play for about 15 minutes and then it freezes. As for my CPU temp, the Speedfan program says it's at 88 degC.

88 degrees C is pretty hot. You might wanna doublecheck your fans.
Remove all dust and check if they are connected properly.
Do you have crashing issues with other 3D games?

Was thinking the same thing. In Speedfan it lists 3 fans, but only shows one running. I only have one fan, but I wasn't sure if the fan on the GPU and the video card was counted here or not. There is no dust in my comp. I just cleaned it out the other day with an air can. I may take the side cover off for a couple days and see how that works.

As for my video, I wonder if the 6600 is just a little on the minimum specs side of it all. It's still an old AGP card. I am not really wanting to upgrade to PCI-E just yet. I also am suspect of my sound card. That thing is ancient and maybe it's simply not supported by the game. I know it's not supported by the manufacturer any more.

I may just have to buy a new vid card and new sound card.....

I have uploaded a ss of the Speedfan window showing my temps.

This ss was taken with the side cover off and a small house fan blowing directly into the open computer after about 10 minutes. The house fan did bring the temps down, but it appears this is about where they have leveled off.

Yes, you certainly have a temperature problem, 88 on your video card is bad and even your CPU temp is on the high side. You might need to take your PC to a shop and get advice on proper cooling for it, if it continues you could actually damage your video card.

I have purchased another video card to see if this helps. It's not that much money, and it's better than the 6600. As for the CPU temp, ya, I will have to check that out.

Thanks

...BTW, how is the tub and the Goat? It's been a while since I have visited them ;).

Update: Since installing the new card, I haven't had one single problem.

what card did you upgrade to?

I have pretty much the same problem, but I have an earlier version of SpeedFan and besides it's possibly not correctly configured because it doesn't detect my GPU temperature. Anyway it shows that my core temp surpasses 50ºC. Maybe changing the Gfx card will help, but I'm not too eager to change it, since it works with 3d heavy games with gazillions of polys and heavy textures like Armed Assault and Medieval 2 Total War and it's surprising that EU:Rome overheates GPUs like this...

I have updated SpeedFan and it seems that EU:Rome can bring my GPU temperature up to 70º in 5 minutes. It's also a GF 6600, it seems that this game doesn't like Nvidia's 6XXX series, this guy also had the same heating-> game freeze problem with his 6200 card:

http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=356047

Or to put it another way, the 6xxx series has an overheating problem that the EU3 games bring to light :)

The EU3 games load the graphics processor more than almost any other games. Not because of graphical detail or high resolution, but because every function possible is offloaded onto the video chip, to free up the main processor to deal with the vast amount of data the games process.

When I had my 6600 card in, Speedfan showed my GPU temp. When I installed my new 7300, my GPU temp reading went away. My core temp hangs out at around 50°C.

I have downloaded a more recent version of speedfan and it now shows my GPU temp. I've been making some testing following temperature graphics and both my core temp and GPU temp increase significantly when playing EU:R (even lowering all GFX options to the minimum both in game options and NVIDIA control panel options). And after a while, the game freezes and I have to go "Ctrl+Alt+Del" to close it.

Playing other games, both temperatures also increase almost as much, maybe a bit less I'd say, but they don't freeze.

Stationary temp: Core 42C GPU 50C
EUR temp: Core 62-66C GPU 66-72C.
Other Games temp: Core 62-64 GPU 66-69C

think i figured it out

i have a nvidia 6600 and it would crash on me i couldnt play more then 15 minutes and after a couple of reformats and messing everything up i finnaly turned down my clock speeds... my core speed is at 282mhz and memery clock is at 431 mhz .... not sure if you cant have them higher but since the game works now i dont want to mess around with it anymore..... hopefully the game works for now on have been playing it the last 2 t0 3 days with not one crash

Damn, I finaly bought a new card, an 8600 1Gb, and the freeze still happens. I can't believe it.

The rest of the 3d games now have awesome framerates at least... In fact even EUR runs really smoothly and fast now... but it still freezes.

I'm ready to try the clock speed thingie if someone teaches me.
