I'm playing DD and the game seems to crash randomly. It's not triggered by any particular event. I get the black screen, then the message that I need to let Microsoft know about it, etc. So I do. Wouldn't it be nice if they actually did something about that?

Anyway, is there a diagnostic I can run or something?

I read an earlier post about the problem being on the computer and not the game - I think that's what's happening here because it doesn't happen at work.

Any info would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Try this first

1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a Virus check and a Adware/Spybot checker
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

If this is not working, run dxdiag and save the test results and post contest of that file in this thread.

Yup, that's basically the starting point of any investigation. ;)

That worked!

Thanks for your help - that appeared to solve the problem. Just got done playing for 2+ hours with no problems.

Also, the little movie at the beginning (with the caveman art inthe rain or whatever that is) didn't play. No loss - kind of a benefit really.

I appreciate it and hope I can contribute in some way down the line.
