I've read a couple posts where people have mentioned something about coded Randem Events (which, obviously, aren't random) not occurring if you save or stop a game. One reference implied this happens if you save after a monarch comes to power if the event is coded to that monarch.

Can someone give me the particulars on this? Thanks for your help.

There are "historical events" that are triggered to happen at certain times in a given monarch's reign. Apparently if you reload a save game during a monarch's reign, any events that have not yet occured will not occur.

So don't save the game to play later when you finally get that fantastic monarch you have been waiting for. Monarchs start and end in the historical years of their reigns (with a few excecptions), so if you know it, save just before.

I consider this a rather big bug. Don't you?

Well, I do. I hope it's fixed in the next patch. Sometimes I can only play for 30 minutes or so. (unlike some, I can't/won't give up either work or my life to only play a game... )

I'm guessing they cut down on random events from the savefile simply because it would be too big if everything was saved (it's 2MB behemoth as it is).

Anyway, I wouldn't hold my breath for having it in a future patch, but I would definitly welcome it if it was implemented.

CM has saves regularly nicely over 100 MB :D If 2 MB is a behemoth ... ;)

You didn't have to download the CM savegame over a 56k modem when plaing MP did you... =)

2MB IS a behemoth under those circumstances

Bah, even on a 56K modem 2 MB is nicely doable. Unless ur spoiled otherwise with a super connection ;)

CM plays slow online though. But it's turn based which works very nicely.

It gets a bit annoying: in aboout 3/4 of times i get a monarch with random events, i must go somewhere. And save. And lose events. Bugger Wonder how much it would have added to savegame? 1mb? 10mb?

Always save just before u get such a monarch ;)

What hjarg said, woudl it really be that big ?

I mean all monarchs and leaders get listed in the file and those are considerably bigger than all the events files.

Alwyas save, always save... and guess who always forgets it :(

I don't think the game would have to save the random event occurrance in the save file. At game startup (or save game load), it knows the current date, each country's monarch, and the monarch start date. Meanwhile historical events are relative to the monarch start date. All the information needed is available.

If the "History" function was implemented, I would like to see all the event occurrance in it. I suspect this was not implemented becuase of file size required (and a few other things, too). Of course, it probably was not a critical feature, either. :D

I agree with Huszics on the size issue - 2MB is a bit slow on 56KB or less line. Save games are ideal for zipping, though, they get very small.

I've bee wondering a bit about that too.

Why isn't there an on-the-fly compression algorithm implemented ?

There are lots of REALLY good compression uitlities that they could have easily implemented in the game engine for free.

Normal savegames should probably still be uncompressed (to alow easy editing) but why the host doesn't compress the file and the clients then uncompress it on-the-fly in MP saverestart I cannot understand. Seems silly since it easily compress 1:10-20.

XML, too. Since the plain text files are only streamed in or out infrequently, performance is no problem. XML would be very nice for data "organization" and access.

I don't think Paradox spent much effort on peripheral game issues - they were just too low priority.

Monarch events

I would consider this "bug" really qualifies the game as "broken." You lose the entire historical flavor of the game with it. I had been playing the game for a while before I hopped on here and was confused to learn that Russia even had a time of troubles or that France has religious wars. I usually play for 30-60 minutes stints and have obviously missed quite a bit of the game. Paradox should fix this ASAP!

Those events were only added recently in the IGC htough. The regular GC doesn't have that many events. The game is still quite historically if u miss them all. Though it'd be very nice if it could be fixed.
