Does researching rapid sleep now mean my peeps can work the night shift without penalty?

Also, even if the penalty still applies do I need to provide services at night since no one is really sleeping any more?

And if rapid sleep doesn't negate the night shift penalty, what does it do?

I doubt it removes the penalty but being awake longer I think might be a double edged sword. It means they will probably go do interest activities more often. So if they can meet all of them, bonus, they are extra happy. If they cannot it means more happiness hits. Also if you have the art workshop or electronics store more interest activities means more cost.

I think though I'd still be happy to see the tech every time because it has the extra sanity recovery as well.

It is a separate breakthrough tech:

Nocturnal Adaptation - All colonists gain +20 performance during night shifts
They may be somewhat overlapping techs.

I got "External Fusion" breakthrough early game which reduced staffing costs at fusion reactors to none, it wasn't tell late game that I got "Fusion Regulation" which reduces staff costs, "Rapid sleep" and "Nocturnal Adaptation" could be similar.
