Haven't played in a while, started up a new game, and got realm distress.

There is almost no information on this event anywhere, except the patch notes.

So, if I read if correctly, in order to stop realm distress I have to conquer the nobles breaking free? And what exactly causes realm distress?

NO
Annexation of rebel nobles is out of question because of annexation penalty.

Realm Distress is event which can start when nobles rebels start breaking free or in other words rebel against king/emperor. Event Realm Distress will end when nobles rebellions will end. It is not important if they will become independent or again your vassals because only important thing is if you defeat and annex rebel noble other nobles will become angry and maybe rebel which will extend period of Realm Distress

As said, don't annex them again. This will increase bad boy, which will lower loyalty, and you end up in a rebellion spiral of death.

Important thing is to be at peace. The trait won't go away while you are at war. So settle peace fast 8either by letting them go independent, or force vassalize them, which is BB neutral).

Try to keep whatever vassals you might have left on good terms. If someone rebels again, make sure to end the conflict soon, to increase your time at peace between rebellions (because they will happen) and thus increase the likelyhood of the event firing that removes Realm Duress.

you can also hope for the death of your ruler, who will take the trait with him to his grave. Though his heir might get the event if there are still rebellious vassals causing trouble.

It is your vassals who give you Realm Duress in certain situations. Vassals with the 'Rebellious' trait can generate discontent and loyalty hits amongst your other vassals, and eventually they can get an event to start a civil war, at which point your ruler will get Realm Duress, making the who situation much worse.

You will probably have to live with constant rebellions, and losing some of your realm who breaks free. But don't worry too much about that. You get free claims, and later on you can have fun getting your realm back together again :)

But yeah, it can be frustrating to get ... try getting it for your infant ruler, who just took over 5 kingdoms. Fun times ahead.

When you conquer your rebellious nobles, try giving up your claims on their titles in addition to forcing them to be your vassals. Force vassalization gives you 0 badboy. Giving up your claims gives you negative badboy! So you can win a war, get a bit of prestige, DECREASE your badboy, and keep your realm intact all at once!

Just try to make it so your war demands don't drop into negative numbers, because then the game thinks you are surrendering to your vassal (yes, even if you occupy all of his lands and have destroyed his army) and you actually lose prestige. Of course, it can sometimes be worth it to drop a little prestige to recover your dismal reputation.

The key to handling the eventually inevitable Realm Duress is having a strong personal Demesne. If you own the 6+ richest provinces in your realm you wont have big problems militarily. Let them rebel, revassalise where it fits and let your most rebellious vassals go, you can take terrible revenge later ;>.
