The realm duress malus for expanding; can I do anything directly to deal with it, or does time just need to pass? It's slowing me down considerably, though I guess that might be the point.

that is kinda the point - it's there to represent the difficulties of governing an ever-expanding realm within a feudal system (which is part of the reason why the LI-verse is full of fragmented realms, aside from sectarian revolts and rulers of noteworthy empires getting assassinated a lot of times)

Perhaps leveling up the Divine Right, Feudalism, etc. techs should increase the thresholds before the next level is triggered?

while I would have indeed liked a way to make the thresholds change as tech goes up, there isn't a way to do so without creating multiple versions of the same modifier that is tech-dependent (even then, I'm not sure if it's possible to make it tech dependent at all)

still, if it is possible to make triggered modifiers tech dependent, then I might experiment with that in the future

(of course, this would add a few hundred more triggered modifiers, and I'm not sure if this would worsen lag or have no effect)

Improved tech helps with realm duress, in that I don't think realm duress does anything major to your own demense. It mainly deals with troops and money received from vassals (Once I've got 10 or so kingdoms under my belt, I don't get any taxes, except in cases where they really like me, or I try and bleed them for as much money as I can). Personally, beyond things that aren't possible with the CK2 engine (it'd be nice if the realm duress modifier acted as a final, multiplicative modifier, so that I still get some taxes, just not a lot) realm duress seems pretty okay. Difficult to deal with, but not impossible.
