It seems this forum has a lot of threads on this topic started in like 2020 and so I wanted to avoid the continued necroposting. I've recently really been enjoying the game but have mostly been spending my time in other pdx titles. I want to be a bit more constructive in my feedback here than maybe some of the other threads have gotten, because there's clearly frustration here.
I know there's already a lot of topics on popup spam, and I generally am pro the ask to give us more granular tools to filter out notification spam on a finer detail than we have today. Victoria 3 has a system for this, but even that is not finely grained enough.
The problem here is that there's a key dichotomy to when something feels like spam at peace, versus at war. If I am in the middle of a huge succession war, micromanaging my armies, the popups make this very difficult to work through. Such that I stop paying attention to them, in many cases, since I have more important things to worry about. When I'm at peace, they actually aren't so bad! They keep the game feeling alive while I wait out truces, or do more long term planning, or am traveling to events.
Then there's the part that I can't get notifications for things I want to be notified about. If I want to marry into another dynasty, or get a house member in a line of succession, I can't, even when pinning the character, be notified when they have a kid. If I have a truce with an enemy I want to go to war with, I can't set an ingame timer or notification that the truce has expired.
The combination of both too much notifications at the wrong time, with no way to filter them down, plus the inability to opt-in to events I want to know about is the crux of the issue.
For example, in war, I do not care about:
- Schemes targeting anyone else other than my close family, or landed house members. Unless there is an interaction I can take like imprisonment.
- Gifts, or Jarl's coming to swear fealty.
- Any other meaningless non interactable event that can be automated.
In peace I like to see these things. In war let me focus on what is sometimes the existential threat I am facing.
Having some way to configure what events I can see, when I pin characters, like rivals, or would-be allies to subscribe to things like births & deaths in their close family, changes in their titles or claims and more would be awesome. I would also love to subscribe to and pin titles, to know if people develop or lose claims to those titles.
So I'm asking for more granular filtering, much like in Victoria 3, with the ability to have differing rules between war and at peace if desired, and a way to get more events if desired for specific characters. I think Victoria 3 took this in the right direction, please consider learning from that case and taking it further. Alternatively, allow more mods to be used for stuff like this in a manner that would not disable achievements. To my knowledge even minor UI mods disable achievements in this game, and that could be a middle ground.
