Red Wave - A Cold War Battlescenario

Hello everybody! Inspired by all the great mods (All the russias, HSR, SMEP etc.), I decided to learn how to modify this great game. I am going to do a series of battle scenarios that take place in a fictional WW3.

I thought that it would be a good idea to start out with a battlescenario for each and every one of the theatres of war, starting with the Baltic front and then moving onto the bigger battlefield in central europe.

I've scrapped this idea now, and I am going to create one MASSIVE battlescenario called "Red Wave".

The background story
Kremlin, autumn, 1980. The leaders of the soviet union have decided that it's now or never. "The world belongs to the people!" they say. Sabotage units are already in place well inside several of the targetted NATO/West-friendly countries neighbouring the Warsaw pact nations, and they have been given the final order. An order which will set the world aflame once again...

There are over 30 playable nations, including:
  • USSR
  • USA
  • France
  • PRC (Or simply "China")
  • And many, many more...

All the countries combined (And mobilized) have over 700 land divisions (!) and over 100 air divisions!

There's much research to be done and I've only just started thinking about OOBs and all that (Tracid has already helped me out a lot :). Keep in mind that this is the first time I've ever touched the vanilla files (Well, done any major modifications anyway). Any critique, critisism, comments, suggestions are more than welcome! This is supposed to be my discussion thread after all :)

I'm going to reserve this part of the thread for screenshots.

Here's what I've done as of October 5th, 2005.
Bold = Finished. Plain text = Haven't touched it. Italics = Work in progress. The smaller text indicates what I mean by "graphics" for example.

  • Overall design and layout of the mod - name of the modification, the timeline, the general content...
  • AI Coding - replacing the old ww2 ai with a new cold war ai
  • Events - sabotage events, mobilization events, defeat and win events, creation of buffer states...
  • Graphics - .exe icon, loading screen, nation & menu pictures, unit models, event pictures...
  • OOBs - divisions, flottilas and squadrons for all nations in the battlescenario...
  • Nations - country files complete with head of state and head of government pictures
  • Leaders - land, air and naval leaders for all countries...
  • Battlescenario the map itself and other things related to that...
  • Unit files making infantry a bit more mobile in contrast to the ww2 infantry, adding helicopter battallions...
  • Music background music...

Its always good to see more people get interested in modding. If you need any help or suggestions once you start up work on this first scenario I'd be willing to give either.

I've begun working on the boundries of the scenario, and it's almost complete... I'll give you another update once I can get the scenario running without any errors :)

It works! Completely without any errors, it loads! Heureka! It's the initial baltic scenario, without Atruejedis awesome sexxicolors mod.

Are you going to eventually link all these scenarios up, so you could have a massive general battle scenario of a third world war all over Europe in the early 80s?

I've actually been looking for a game like that for ages, but haven't been able to find anything which was even vaguely playable - the closest I could ever find was a couple of scenarios for Civ 2...

While nuts and bolts military history research really is impossible for me (I'll suffer a history overdose if I look at any more periods!), if you need any help with event or AI coding, I go try with some stuff (time permitting, obviously!). Also, if you want to do a music pack (a la my "All the Russias" one), I could quite quickly dig up a lot of DDR/Soviet music from my hard drive...

I will at some point link all the battlescenarios up, though at the moment, I want to start out small. This is after all my first mod :) Music would be great, since I have no idea where to get music that fits into the time period and the mod itself... Thanks for showing interest :)

Mod status: I'm now using sexxicolors, by Atruejedi (Thanks a lot for letting me use it!), and I've started doing some basic graphics. Also, head of state / head of government pictures will be working today. Will also go to the library and see what I can dig up :)
 
After a little research I was able to come up with what I think is a MOSTLY historical Army OOB for Poland. You can go ahead and add in brigade how you see fit since I really wasnt sure what to give them based on the OOB I used (which was based on the Polish Army in 1989)

On a different note, if you want a new scenario selection icon, loading screen or any other graphics like that I suggest you ask Rey and see if he'll help you out, as he does a really, really great job on those kind of things.

Thanks a lot for the OOB, that helps me a lot. I'm going to lock most of them, since I think that most of the polish units would be busy enough in central/western europe. Regarding the graphics, I've got that bit covered. It's the coding bit that's providing me with some rather interesting challenges...

That's probably a clever way of doing it, so you don't get overwhelmed at the start! If it's just a battle scenario over a fairly limited period you shouldn't have too many events (mostly occupation stuff...), so I'd imagine that most of the work would be researching the techs and OOBS - these are things that people into military history will know about, so you could easily find some help for this, and they'll be very quick to correct you if it's wrong!

For the music, most of the Soviet/Commie stuff you'll be able to get from here: http://english.sovmusic.ru/

There's possible a bit too much there, so if you PM some sort of email address I could send you a selection of the more obvious/better tunes on it.

Not sure about the music for the West though: as its the 80s, you could add some contemporary power rock or soundtracks from films like Rambo, although I'd reckon these may be subject to copyright (and may be a bit painful to some!)
 
Where is Norway??

The soviets like planned to invade norway, its a nato country.

I fail to see what strategic importance Norway would be. Plus, to undertake an invasion of Norway, you would need Sweden under your control. It's not really feasable to take a load of soviet marines from Murmansk and drop them off the norweigan coast whilst you've already invaded europe, turkey and already have units in Afghanistan. It would be a logistical nightmare!

Well, I still only want to start out with the baltics, just to try and experiment (Plus, the already giant list of to-do's would just grow beyond everything). About the music, I've sent you a pm :)

I've almost got all the graphics nailed, plus the warsaw pact OOB is complete! I'll post a preview of the mod (A video trailer, similiar to the Hearts of Iron 2 one) later on :)
 
Hello! I'm writing from the Paradox office at the moment :) I got my internship and I won't be able to work on this mod for another 2 weeks as I'm busy play... I mean, learning up here... *cough* :rolleyes:

So, about the mod. I've decided to extend this mod to a greater '80 cold war battlescenario, sporting over 20 playable nations with theatres of war ranging from the baltic to east asia. This means a bigger workload, but I've got it all worked out in my head :)

NATO strategy relied heavily on European NATO forces to hold Warsaw Pact forces while waiting for reinforcements to arrive from North America by sea. Also, resupply of Europe relied heavily on trans-Atlantic convoys.

In light of that, if the Soviets gaining naval bases along the Norwegian coast (and denying NATO use of ports and airfields) was important for the battle for the Atlantic, which in turn would have serious impact in the battle for Europe.

Well, the Red Banner North Fleet (or what it was called) was of considerable size, so the Soviets might be able to control the North Sea to some degree, and the Soviet army-/airforce-units stationed on Kola were also large.

In any case, with you expanding the mod, I'm guessing the northern flank will be part of it all ;)

Hmm, I guess you're right on that point, didn't think about it.

So how do you feel I should handle the soviet invasion of Norway? Should it be undertaken when Sweden & Finland have been dealt with or should a light force of marines/paratroopers invade Norway in a fashion similiar to Sweden? I'm open for all suggestions :)

Well, the Red Banner North Fleet (or what it was called) was of considerable size, so the Soviets might be able to control the North Sea to some degree, and the Soviet army-/airforce-units stationed on Kola were also large.

Indeed, got a book on soviet military might and another one on submarines at home.

Anyhoo, Norway will be included in the new bigger battlescenario :)

If the Soviet plan is to invade Finland and Sweden, I'd think they would hold off on the main effort into Norway till at least Northern Finland and Sweden were taken, since they then could circumvent the natural and manmade defences of Troms. Finnmark would be overrun in any case.

Sounds like an interesting scenario in any case. Has me thinking of "Red Storm Rising" :)

A much bigger workload, but I for one would be very very happy if this were produced, and would be willing to help to make sure it was!

My broadband server is dead (and 150 miles away!) at the moment, so I can't send the mp3 files I've got and organised on my computer (they came up to a total of 35mb in the high-quality versions, so I was waiting to download the lower quality ones!). However, if you give me a couple of days, I could get the download links together and send them to you. Or hopefully once two weeks is up, I should have a high-speed internet connection agan...

Anyway, enjoy you're time at Paradox!
