Since BATTLETECH’s launch, we've received some questions and feedback about the way our in-game Kickstarter rewards redemption system connects with a PDX account. We thought we’d explain how we made our decision.
First, we want to emphasize that this was entirely an HBS decision. We chose to connect our redemption system to PDX’s account system to protect the value of in-game rewards. By integrating with a backend confirmation and security system, we guarantee that only pre-order customers and Kickstarter Backers at the appropriate reward level get what they paid for.
We knew that people might be uncomfortable with the idea of connecting to an account service and had long conversations about it. In the end, we determined that securing in-game reward content for the folks who paid for it was the higher priority.
The best way we could provide security for all unlockable content on all supported platforms was through a common authentication point. Since Paradox is a trusted partner and had a fully-implemented and proven backend system that we could use for free, we chose Paradox Accounts to be that common authentication point. Had we not partnered with Paradox, we would have created a system or found a 3rd party system that would deliver the same results.
Whether we used Paradox’s system or another, the decision would be the same - an account system that securely allows only you to unlock your rewards, thus retaining the value you paid for. Now, the system does require you to be online and logged in when you redeem your code, but, as long as you stay logged in, you do not need to remain online in order to have access to your bonus content (“Offline Mode”). This includes staying logged in between play sessions. Logging out will remove the rewards, online or offline.
