I'm not really much of a modder, but here is a little minimod I made a while ago mainly for my own games and I thought I'd share it with the forums.

Ever been stuck with an incompetent heir? Look no further.

Features:
  • Monarchs can now abdicate through the country decisions menu.
  • You can appoint an heir of your own choosing by using the 'preferred heir' title, and then abdicate to get them on the throne. (Succession is hardcoded so if the ruler dies the 'legal' heir will still assume power)
  • It's also possible to revoke the 'Preferred Heir' title through the decisions menu.

Installation - nothing new here:
  1. Unzip to Europa Universalis - Rome\mod
  2. Open Launcher - pick 'Regency Minimod' from the drop down menu.

As far as I know, succession mechanics are hardcoded, but I worked around it by adding decisions for the ruler to abdicate in favour of either the legal heir or a character of the player's choosing. Choosing an heir is done by granting a 'preferred heir' title to that character. Abdicating in favour of the appointed heir will also cause stability loss and a fairly hefty loyalty drop in the 'legal' heir. Adoptive succession was prevalent in the later days of the Roman Empire, so it can't be that unrealistic a concept for this time period.

Suggestions/Ideas/Bug reports/Feedback welcome! I'm open to adding some more features in the future.

Feel free to use this in your own mods if you want.

Interesting.. Hmm, could be possible to link this up into a potential heritage dispute/civil war? There could be severe tension between the legal and newly chosen heir, as the latter could be see as less legitimate than the other in some circles.

Also this isnt really about regency -rule in stead of child/incapacitated ruler-, right?

Good idea, I was considering some things like that. However, I also wanted to make allowances for simulating a government where choosing an heir is more 'routine', so to speak. I might add some events if I can think of ways to do it without overcomplicating the mod.

Yeah, I know... but it sounded best in my head, better in than 'Appoint heir mod'. Also, latin: regere - 'to rule', regens - 'one who rules' (or thereabouts), so in this context I was using it as a catch-all term for monarchy/succession related stuff.

Thanks for the link, but is there a possibility to mix this with Reing of the ANcients and/or Epigoni mod?

It should definitely work with Epigoni, you'll just need to copy the relevant sections from titles.txt and titles.gfx into the corresponding files in the mod, and everything else you can just copy straight across. It's been a while since I played RotA so I can't be entirely sure for it, but the process should be similar in any case.

I tried copying the relevant pieces, but now the game has blocks of text everywhere. Objectives for character are blocks of text explaining why they want to be a physician which overlaps with the next and is a mess.

Sounds like a localisation problem, will take a look at it when I'm next at my computer. Is this Epigoni or RotA?

As an interim workaround, you could always delete 'Regency Minimod.csv' from the localisation folder. The text for my content will disappear, but the function would remain and it shouldn't conflict with the other mod.

So does this really work with Epigoni or Reign of the ancients, I looked everywhere for a way and I finally found this. Sort of late, months late. But for me this was the deal breaker. Hated most of the heirs, just wanted to select my heir.

Sorry about any problems, I don't even have Rome properly installed at the moment so can't test anything, but I'll try and help as much as I can.

1. Copy Regency Minimod/decisions/regency.txt into (Mod you want)/decisions
2. Open Regency Minimod/common/titles.txt in Notepad or a similar text editor. Copy all the text marked 'Regency Mod'.
3. Open (Mod you want)/common/titles.txt in Notepad. Paste the text at the bottom.
4. Open Regency Minimod/interface/titles.gfx in Notepad. Copy the text at the bottom marked 'Regency Mod'
5 Open (mod you want)/interface/titles.gfx in Notepad. Paste the text at the bottom again.
6. Copy Regency Minimod/localisation/Regency minimod into (Mod you want)/localisation

IF the text ends up all messed up:
Delete the localisation file. There will be no text for the mod, but the functionality will still be there. Apologies for that but as I said I don't have it installed at the moment.
Hope this helps!

So damn late, I know I know I'm sorry.

Thank you, I deleted the localisation and it works fine. So cheers!

If you see this...do you know how to mod ROA? some character traits are bugged with weird marble head statue icons and some never get assigned. If you ever read this msg me. Thanx.
