Simple question...why the hell does my reputation go down when I attack and annex pagan lands? There's no restrictions or penalties for declaring war on them, but why does everyone hate me when I purge various lands of pagans? I didn't know they were so popular... I find this really annoying and is making the game kind of pointless.

Grabbing titles and declaring war on Christian rulers is an easy way to go from honorable to dishonorable scum.

It is done to make expanding your realm harder. Before this was introduced it was just to easy to conquer whole pagan or muslims realms in one war without any bad effects.

To bad you don't like this new feature.

You can look at this paradox following way... Controlling directly or through vassals more provinces enhances (usually) your income, Prestige and Piety (through appropriate action). The ultimate goal for every Christian ruler is maximize Prestige and Piety (according to CK Manual). Pagan and muslim lands are a scarce resource. In a sense, you conquer those lands at expense of other Christian rulers. They honor, but hate you for that - and this is reflected in a game by Prestige increase and Reputation decrease.

Well ok. I can see the reasoning I suppose. Did this change occur with Deus Vult?
Eh, so much for righteous war and smiting of infidels then. I'll just sit...and collect prestige. *snore* That and engage in an endless cycle of fighting my rebellious vassals.

This was introduced in DV yes.

You can still conquer pagan/muslim lands BB-free though. That works as follows.

Everytime you conquer (win a siege) a pagan/muslim province you get a claim on that province. Giving up claims reduces badboy. So lets say that in one war you conquer 6 provinces. In the peace-deal you then take 2, that gives you 2 x 2 BB = 4 BB and at the same time you renounce your claims on the other 4, that gives you 4 x -1 BB = -4 BB. So from taking those 2 provinces you don't get any BB at all.

Also rebelling vassals are an excellent way to reduce BB, since when they rebel you get claims on their titles. If you then defeat them, then in the peace you can force-vassalize them and at the same time give up your claims on their titles. That way you have made him a vassal again and your BB has been reduced. This is a big exploit.

.... and ...you can force vassalize the last 4 provinces with no extra BB. So in total you would have gotten two new demesne provinces and (up to) 4 new vassals for 0 BB.

It is considered a bit gamey to do it like this ... but sometimes necessary in larger campaigns, if you don't want to halt it half-way.
