How are research costs determined? They seem to be more or less random in my current game. Two examples:

9 to 10 in military land tech: 6200D
10 to 11 in military land tech: 1650D
11 to 12 in military land tech: 3200D
12 to 13 in military land tech: 7800D

And even more confusing:

9 to 10 in naval tech: 1600 D
10 to 11 in naval tech: 970 D
11 to 12 in naval tech: 650 D
12 to 13 in naval tech: 4800 D

All the while, infrastructure and trade level cost a fixed amount of (gulp) 19000+D for going from 4 to 5. BTW, how many infrastructure and trade levels are there?

All of these occurred in fairly short order, so the differences are not the result of inflation or changing country size.

Trade and Infrastructure has ten levels
(supa powa)

And yes, the cost of some naval/land techs
are really strange. For example, say that level 30 cost 4000D, and after that, level 31 to 38 costs about 300D.

Suddenly you breeze through a great number of levels that costs nothing.

This is not the case with Trade/Infra, just Land/Naval.

Anyone have a clue to this?

The obvious reason, though I don't know if it's correct or not, is that those levels with greater cost lead to important breaktroughs (and bonus effects).
