I feel like I might have misunderstood how things work with one time research bonuses.

Say you finish one of the various events that say "Society Research Gained 1382.0". My expectation is that if your currently researched Society tech is at 120/2000, after this event, you would then be at 1502/2000, much closer to getting the tech.

I've been going through the multi-step specimen research quest line, earning 1382 each time, according to the text... but my Society research doesn't seem to get bumped up. I even found it with a score of, say, 200/3000.

Just made a test. Tech was at 3799/10000. At the turn of the month, I find one of the species. My research is now at 3992 which means it only gained my monthly 193.42 progress. Where did the 1382 from the discovery go?

It goes into Stored Research:
Whenever research output is not actively used, it accumulates as stored research. Stored research also includes research resources gained from other avenues, such as debris analysis, anomalies, events, etc.

This allows for a more "relaxed" approach research by eliminating the possible loss of research points due to forgetting to pick a research project while, at the same time, also simulating accelerated periods of research (as opposed to sudden "jumps") caused by newfound knowledge sources. The current storage levels can be seen by hovering over the appropriate resources.

Stored research effectively doubles research speed, as it is spent at a rate matching current output, as long as there is enough stored research.

I had a few events in the past where it didn't work or a first contact recently (reported it). But most should work and put the research in the stored research.

You can see it on the top bar, go to research, then select a category to get the tooltip.

Stored research is used monthly and gives you up to your current research amount. Which doubles the speed for research afaik.

AFAIK it doubles the base research, but doesn't apply any bonuses. Still it's helpful. This is why I spam research ships early and research all anomalies that don't take more than a year. It can double your research early in the game when very few bonuses to the research speed apply.

Checked in the game since. I now see the "Stored" entry on each research type (in the top bar). And in the Research screen, I can see how up to the base research amount is added as a bonus each month.

Thanks all for the explanations!

Research from events is worth it. you can easily boost your knowledge with research like a student of ALEX who clears all exams through research students pay someone to do Alek projects for their research. If your research is broad you can easily defeat every exam query.
