Title says it all. Will Planetfall have randomized research similar to Age of Wonders 3 or will it be set in a technology tree like say Civilization? Is there anything devs can say about this yet?

@sikbok ? =)

I think I'd prefer a mixed form - like you needing 50% of a certain Tier's tech to advance to the next tier, but then have free choice of every tech of every unlocked tier.

But I have full trust that the system will be the - slightly suboptimal - system we have in 3.

That would work for me. That way you tier up more progressively and not randomly.

We're still hard at work on the research system.
Its one of those systems where a lot of the game connects, making it one of the last to get straightened out.

There is a new version - that's pretty good imho - that's being tested internally now.
Won't spoiler which flavour - random, semi-random, fixed - that is yet, since I don't do promises I can't keep.

This is probably correct, because an entirely static tech tree gets too predictable and cookie cutter-y, and just all around stale. An extremely randomized one becomes a mess, because it's too chaotic, and it doesn't feel good or controllable anymore. Techs also lose identity in a sense. I agree that the best of both worlds approach would be to have certain techs be static, like milestones or goalposts, while most are more like cards randomly pulled from a deck of cards, kind of like in Stellaris.

So just like it is in Age of Wonders 3? I Agree I pretty much like the Age of Wonders 3 approach. But

also sounds good, even though it might clutter up your research "book" pretty hard in lategame...

That would happen gradually however, so you'd probably not have too much problems with it on the condition it doesn't take too long to scroll through your options. And of course the research in this case should be sorted on tier.

That said, I wouldn't mind a return of the AoW3 system.

And then there is the question of homeworld, which i suspect may work somewhat similar to old age of empires 3 home cities... and then some kind of way to bring that tech to your present colony.

most of the reasearch will be race based, but there will be a sort of classes.

In AoW3 you had races, classes and specializations - as you mention Gloweye, we know there will be races and classes (secret tech), but have my doubts about there being specializations. Wouldn't complain if it was inn though =D

Race Governance was a little bit like race tech, although separate from other research. I know it's different with mutual exclusivity and different mechanics but it's still there.
