Is there any way to speed up research? It's the only part of the game that I can't really figure out. Which factors influence the speed of my research?

There are several factors that can influence research speed, and what they are depends partly on your research focus. But rule of thumb is that roads and harbours in provinces speed up any kind of spread you can think of (techs/culture/religion/plague etc). Usually building library, school and university also helps. Especially critical is to have them in your capital (where discoveries happen).
