Introduction

Since when Asalto wrote is fantastic AAR, Heirs of the Weltkrieg, I started to create a personal mod rappresenting how I thought things would have gone if, in the fateful year of 1940, France never demanded Alsace-Lorraine, and we had a situation of cold war for more than 60 years. This mod died very soon, but the newest Asalto's AAR has given me the desire to finish the mod and start my own AAR.

I know that is really unlikely that another World War never erupted, so I tried to make a scenario where the three most important factions had almost the same power to prevent that any of them felt strong enough to attack the others (untill now, obviously), so there are no Bengala or CSA, but neither Carlist Spain or Italian Federation.

In conclusion, I tried to make an interesting scenario for a three-sides cold war, and I hope you will enjoy following this AAR and help me to improve it. :D
The following updates will be focused on a brief description of the world and the history since 1936.

All the credits go to the MDS and Kaiserreich teams, without which I would never been able to play their fantastic mods and have the idea for this, and to Asalto, who give me the ispiration. ;)
--------------
This is my first AAR in Paradoplaza, and also my first in english, so please be patient with all my grammatical error and my poverty of speech :eek:o, or better point me them so I can improve my english for my future. ;)

Looks interesting, can't wait for the first update.

I remember when I began my first (and utter crap) KR-MDS AAR. Somehow I feel responsible for the deluge that came after :D

Wonderful, it seems that KR-MDS type of AAR had left experimental phase and became new genre in AARland.

I look forward to your story, good luck with your first AAR!

@everyone: thank you all guys, it's nice to see that there is so much interest :D
Just a little introduction about why I chose Commune of France: untill now there have been written only three MDS-KR AARs, two about MittelEuropa and one about Entete, so a syndacalist AAR was a must. I will have a tough time anyway, since I start with half the IC and the army of Germany...

News from the world: Europe

The most important events for Europe occurred between the end of the 30s and the beginning of the 40s, mainly caused by the 1937 Ausgleich. That year Bohemia, Croatia, Bosnia and Hungary decided to secede from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, causing a bloody civil war. Although Hungary had the strongest army, many divisions had to be diverted to the Romanian borders, because in the meanwhile the countries of the Belgrade Pact (Greece, Romania, Serbia) had declared war against Bulgaria, profiting of the distraction of the international community.

Commune of France and Repubblic of Sicilies opened another front for Austria (which was slowly but steady winning the war) attacking the Italian Federation, and being able to occupy Rome and Milan in less than two months, forcing the Pope to temporarily flee to Spain. But the situation was falling there too and, after the death of King Alfonso, the Spanish Civil War, between Carlists, Anarchists and Royalists started. Ireland, Nationalist France and Portugal helped the Carlists, but the direct intervention of Commune of France, that couldn't allow the existance of a pro-german state so close to her borders, completely turned the tide of the war, offering Spain to the CNT-FAI. The Pope was again forced to exile, this time in Nationalist France.

Back in the Balkans, war was still stagnating, without any side being able to make a succesfull offensive. But the most unexpected of the events append: Germany entered the war alongside Hungary. This shocking occurance (allowed by the victory of the Grossdeutsche Volkspartei (GDVP)) freed many hungarians troops allowing Hungary to focus on Galicia, Bosnia and Croatia. The newborn Republic of Italy tried to grab as much territory as possible, gaining Venice, Trento and Trieste, but Fiume, Pola and Bolzano were occupied by German and Hungarians army. Austrian population generally welcomed the Anschluss, tired of fighting for an empire which caused more problems than gains.

Soon after also Ireland and Portugal were invaded by british and spanish army for their support to Carlist and fully integrated in the respective contries, while Poland and Lithuania merged in an unique country and Bulgaria (togheter with Albania) was finally divided between the Belgrado Pact. France peacefully obteined Genève from Switzerland, that is still alive nowadays because everybody wanted some parts of it, and this prevented anybody to attack.

In the 40s Spain had a profound crisis when the people realized that Anarchists couldn't run a country, and the population was in the verge of another civil war. The International intervened again and a complete new state was created, the Iberian Union, more similar to Union of Britain with her big federal grants to the various ethnical groups (Portuguese, Catalan, Basque,...).

Some years later the Golden Age of Russia started, that peaked with the Great Asian War. The new Tzar, Vladimir Kirillovič Romanov, had managed to give stability to the country, recognizing the Soviet comunities and applying favorable laws for the population, and to peacefully inherit the Don-Kuban Union, gaining the favor of the Cossacks. Encouraged by this success, he tried to gain controll also to the other secessionist states, but fortune was adverse: Georgia was firmly protected by International and Ottoman Empire (which preferred a buffer state as a neighbor) and Azerbaijan was supported by either Persia and Turkestan. The only European state not in the german sphere was Finland (the Nikita Khruščёv's revolution ended with the immediate intervention of the Wehrmacht), and the 30 november 1949 the Winter War started. The Finns resisted fiercely to the assault, causing heavy casualties to the attackers untill peace was signed the 13 april 1950, which gave all of Karelia to the Russian Empire.

In the 70s, the years of uprising, Polish riots were able to make Lithuania collapse and to lead to the creation of a new state, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, ruled by the House of Radziwill. Germany supported the new country to gain the sympathies of the polish people, that was causing troubles in all Eastern Europe. In the same years Netherlands and Denmark became members of MittelEuropa after a failed syndacalist coup the first (which lead to the indipendence of Indonesia) and to prevent that Greenland became a second Iceland the second (referring to the state of tension between Union of Britain and Canada that almost degenerated into war).

I like the Hungarian variation for the A-H- Empire and the Polish-Lithuan Commonwealth. Well done. Spain... well...

Very original scenario, interesting development in Austria!

You will probably really have a tough job as Red France with such threatening Mitteleuropa, but at least you have your back protected with friendly Spain(too bad you didn't change it to red colour, this yellow looks too royalist IMHO:p).

Is Georgia still Syndicalist? Well, even if they were always led by Syndies, Ottomans probably supported them because they didn't want to have direct border with Russia.

Can't wait to see other parts of the world. You said that blocs are quite equal in stength, can we expect also powerful Entente?

I agree, I like the fact that you're coming up with more inventive scenarios for your world. It's rather worrying that you only have half the IC and army of military... well it should make for an interesting far at least.

I know that yellow is too monarchic or however right, but red was... a real eyesore. If you have suggestion for other colors (other yellows, or complitely differents), they are all welcome. ;)

Middle East and Caucasus will be interesting, the equilibrium is very fragile, and there are thousands of casus belli...

About Entete: they could become the strongest faction, but their power is still asleep...

As interesting as I thought it would be, great start!

News from the world: Africa

Africa has been divided for the last 80 years in two giants states, Nationalist France (nowadays also known as Free France, as it is called by the local Frenchs) and MittelAfrika, the German puppet made up by all the colonies gained before and after the Weltkrieg. Ethiopia is the most proud state of all Africa, being the lone nation in the continent never invaded by an european army, and some Afro-american (expecially in Jamaica and other Carribean Federation's island) support an armed liberation of the Black Continent from the colonialist yoke.

The foreign policy of Free France was very passive, as she was too busy with internal problems to be aggressive and expand is sphere of influence. With the exclusion of the occupation of Spanish Morocco and Portuguese Bissau after the Spanish Civil War, and a brief control over Liberia during the American Civil War. Although Algeria and Tunisia soon became Metropolitan territories, with a slight majority of Frenchs (mainly thanks to French immigrants from Carribean, Québec and Louisiana attracted by favorable laws for colonization of Arab territories, à la Israel in OTL), Sub-Saharan regions faced continous revolt of the various ethnic groups that were fought with a mix of legislative reformation and intervention of the army which, unlike the rest of the world, chose quality instead of quantity (mainly because they couldn't afford the loss of too many precious Frenchmen). Nevertheless, many rights had to be given to the locals (although mainly to the Arabs): right to enter politics, to command the army, to have a fair trial,... This secured some stability to the country, and now the exiles can look again towards Paris with the hope to regain the lost territories.

Altough it may seems strange that so many Frenchmen left their countries to go to Maghreb, this is easily explained because of the economic-political situation of the countries of origin: Canada was becoming every day more and more English-centered, USA faced another deep economic crisis after the end of the American Civil War, Haiti was in a continuous state of tension with Dominican Republic,... while Free France offered a home, an assured job, a future.

MittelAfika soon became the superpower of the region, thanks to her natural resources and technological help from Germany. After the war of expansion against Portugal in 1937, the occupation of the Spanish and Portuguese possessions in 1940 and the colonial war against South Africa in 1948, syndacalist activities in the region started to cause revolts against the German oppressors. To save the country Goering and its successors were forced to increasingly give rights to black people, till to achieve full equality between Germans and non-Germans. This way MittelAfrika could count on the support of the population, and slowly all the syndacalist movements lost any sympathizer. Nowadays the Head of State is still a German, but its role is only to represent the formal allegiance to the German Empire.

South Africa kept an isolationistic policy untill the colonial war with Mittel Afrika. Though South African army managed to resist to MittelAfrikan invasion, it was a clear sign that without foreign help South Afica would have fallen into German or Syndacalist spheres of influence really soon so he decided to became a member of Entete, but didn't accept the Queen as Head of State.

Egypt bought Suez Canal from Germany in 1969, after signing an agreement that stipulated that the canal would be closed to any enemy of German Empire and his allies. Libya broke her chains with the Ottoman Empire at the time of the Great Arab Revolt of the 70s after a bolshevik coup d'état by the Army.

Interesting developments concerning French settlements in North Africa.
It means that something like 6 or 7 million of French speaking individuals settled there (in order to have a slight majority of French in Algeria and Tunisia)...is that possible ?

Mittleafrika looks impressive.

Looks like Mittelafrika and National France are doing quite well!

Is Libya not your ally? Since Bolshevik coup happened there, maybe Commune of France could offer it's protection?

As for colours, I would colour of Republican Spain from vanilla, and maybe also Austrian dark brown for Republic of Sicilies? Light green was always colour of Papal Italy in Kaiserrecih.

Will you also show any political leaders of various states in the future? Eagerly waiting for next update.

Indeed, story of National France is well thought, it's very interesting idea of French from other parts of the world(Quebec, Haiti, Loisiana) coming to Africa. I thing this is plausible.

Interesting update, I'm surprised to see National France and Mittleafrika still around and so strong- I'd expected Syndicalist and national liberation movements to be stronger personally.

Well the comparison with OTL Israël is quite appropriate in this case.

@Karaiskandar: true, 6 millions of French is quite a big number, but if you think about the rapport between the conditions in which they lived and those offered...

@Kurt_Steiner: MittelAfrika is a real monster: his IC is one and a half times that of Free France, and the army and population are even bigger...

@Zhuge Liang: syndacalists movements wanted equality and wellness; Germans gave them to the population and the revolutionaries had nothing more for agitate the masses.

@Asalto: Libya is not my ally mainly for two reason: first, the generals do not really care about the people, so they are left only for their own advantage; second, I tended to make the alliances small, but with a great number of sympathizers (for example, International is limited to Western Europe but they back other nations around the globe), which could enter in the alliance in case of war.
About the colors: brown is ok for Italy, but Spain looks too similar to Hungary, and it would be a mess in case of landing... Has anybody any idea about a color for Australasian Confederation? Australian white is too similar to German gray...
And yes, I will show the leaders of any country of the three blocs, the majority of the other alliances and some of the most important neutrals or sympathizers.

Oh yes a very important factor to take into account.
