The Old Republic
In early January of 1356 a special session of the Tagsatzung was called in Zurich. The subject of this meeting was the increasing power of the powerful Duchies of Milan and Austria, both of these States had claims on Swiss land and many powerful Citizens of the Cantons feared that Austria in particular would seek the Submission of Greater Switzerland.
To prevent this the three most prominent representatives, one for each founding Canton, signed the Zurich agreement with the agreement of the others.
Points of the Zurich agreement
1. Austrian Influence must be countered within the Swiss area of interest.
2. All Cantons will act as one against Foreign enemies.
3. Grisons shall be administered as an independent Canton under Swiss protection as the Gray League. The temporal power of the Bishop of Chur is rejected, as it is the will of neither God or the Swiss but of the Hapsburg.
4. Switzerland cannot stand on it's own, allies must be found.
5. Basel and the Vaud will be annexed into Confederate lands.
6. The Tagsatzung agrees to Elect an overall leader to the office of Stadtholder at the next meeting, who will be leader of the Confederacy for a four year Term.
