So, after searching a bit, I haven't yet found any good guidelines on how to model end or transition nodes for roads. Specifically, the length of the node segment and the number of subdivisions along the axis of the road. Obviously something is wrong, seeing the dreaded blue triangles.

See also attached screenshot with wireframe mesh. Currently its 16 wide, 16 long and has 16 divisions lengthwise.

Ok I scaled the node mesh to be 64 units long (did not change UV-coords yet, interestingly), and now it looks like this. Tried with the pivot at road height and also at kerb height, but it does not seem to affect the height of the node relative to the adjoining road segments...
