As an experiment, I want to build a base sans people. How long do you think the game will allow this B4 forcing the shipment of colonists?. So far, the game seems more fun without them....

Eventually you will run out of funding, and everything will start breaking down. Some buildings require colonists to function, such as mines. Without being able to mine rare metals to sell back to Earth, your funding won't last forever. You also will be limited on your research output as well.

Besides that, what would be the point? The drones are there to build the infrastructure for you colonists to be able to survive. Without the colonists, there's not really anything for the drones to do.

Edit: That being said, you can play however you want, I just don't see the point to what you are suggesting myself.

It might be doable with Europe, I guess, since they'll get funding from research and can leverage their higher tech rate to rush towards the repeatable funding techs. Possibly with the Politician Commander.

Maybe, but you're still pretty limited in how much research you get. You can get boosts from scanning anomalies, but other than that you pretty much limited to the research your sponsor provides. There is a tech that will boost that by 100.... if you can get it. So once you get past the early cheap techs, they will come much slower.

There's also a tech that gives you research per explorer vehicle (with diminishing returns). You could send a ton of those over.

True, I forgot that one. That would help some as well. But how much funding do you actually get from researching techs with that sponsor? You're going to be chewing through your funding fast with electronics and machine parts to keep your stuff running. You won't be able to manufacture those on site as those require colonists to operate.

If you’re lucky enough to get it early, there is a tech which gives mineral and rare mineral extractors production without colonists, but at a reduced rate. If you took that and avoided all the techs that only work on people then I think you can play through the end. I don’t have any idea if any of the mysteries require people though.

The idea , is based on The Mars direct/Mars semi-direct plans , i.e., t to setup an autonomis base with fuel.O2 , etc , along with a fueled/ ready to return launch vehicle. All before manned landings. Sorry i thought it obvious, the idea was created back in the 20th Century. Check out Mars society , Bob Zubrin

It's feasible, challenging and can be a lot of fun, especially when the right RNG Gods smile at you (i.e. you get the right Breakthroughs in the right order). In one of my playthroughs I had all the necessary infrastructure to populate Mars with thousands of people even before bringing the first colonists. And I managed to complete several personal challenges, like: settle a colony with 50 Founders, have first child born in 6 hours, have 10000 resource units in storages, etc.

This, so much this!
