I just bought both EU III Complete and EU Rome Gold last week and neither would work.

EU III had a Direct X DLL error that was fixed when I loaded EU Rome. It was brutally slow but has gotten better when I loaded all the patches.

EU Rome originally had the JIT side-by-side error that was fixed when I loaded the redistributable C++ file but a new error has happened. I get the game to load to the main menu but it has a problem getting there. The screen goes through he normal roman background pictures while loading sprites, provinces etc. but before it gets to the main menu the desktop reappears except for a black square in the upper left quadrant. There is an hourglass so the program is still running but it will flip back and forth from the black square to a full black screen infinitely without going any further. Through pure luck I found that if I click on the bottom menu program icon "EU Rome" that this somehow breaks the logjam/loop and the program proceeds to the main menu. I can start a game, I haven't tried the tutorials, change the start time and pick a country but when I click on play the screen goes black for a second then I get a message that says, An unexpected error has occurred in EURome.exe and the game has had to shut down. I have loaded patches 1.3 and 2.2 but the error still happens.

I have a Dimension E521,Athlon 64 3200+(2.00GHz, 512K), 512MB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3000

I know the memory is low but if it runs EU III I would think it would run EU Rome. Which settings in EU Rome can I change that might help a memory problem if that is the issue. Thanks.

After some digging I may have found the issue. I bought Rome Gold and then installed both the 1.3 and 2.2 patches thinking 1.3 fixed Rome basic and then 2.2 fixed the Vae Victus portion but I read in an earlier post that I should not have installed 1.3 on gold and I should uninstall the whole thing, delete the game directories manually then reinstall patching only 2.2. This does cause a problem in that EU Rome is under the same main directory as EU III but has it's own sub-directory of EU Rome. Can I do this fix only deleting the EU Rome folder or do I have to get rid of them all and reinstall EU III as well. As an aside the posts I read say to install Rome (and 2.2) in a new directory, c:\games\rome is suggested, not in the suggested path, Why is that?

You only have to uninstall Rome Gold and delete its directory. Then install it - preferably somewhere outside the system path like c:\games\rome, then install 2.2 over it - make 100% sure it goes there so it overwrites Rome:Gold .

Thanks, I uninstalled Rome Gold and checked to make sure the directories were deleted then reinstalled and loaded patch 2.2. It works now, at least enough that I started a game and played with it a while and then ran two tutorials. When I tried to run a third it crashed but I believe that is a lack of memory issue. I got the "low virtual memory" message after the crash and restarting the computer to clear the memory let me start and run the game again. My system is on the low end of running the game so I plan to add some more memory which will hopefully prevent the low memory crash. Thanks again.

Indeed, I'd missed that you only have 512mb of memory (I'm assuming 512kb was a typo ...). If you have Windows XP go for at least 1gb, if Vista or Win7 2gb.
