Bought Rome Gold from Gamersgate. Downloaded.

Dealt with the initial problem of the game not getting past the start menu using the stickied solution involving using the "C++ 2005 redistributable", but it won't load beyond the "graphics". It gets to the point where the cursor arrow appears, then I get a runtime error in the C++ library that closes the program in an "unusual way".

Ok, so I upgraded the RAM to a full 2 Gigs and the game loaded and started to play, then the system quite entirely without warning, not even to desktop straight to black. Could be a bad RAM chip. Will let you know.

But the game seemed to run with 2 Gigs of RAM, and with one. but not 512 K.

Also game crashes on quit.

Thanks. I am in the process of upgrading the whole system, in the hope that I can get a couple of more years out of it. Getting a faster chip too.

The earlier CTD was related to RAM. Apparently the new RAM will run with one gig in the first slot, but not with one Gig in both -- board is rated for 2 Gb max. So that crash was not related to RAM. I am looking at RAM compatability issues, but that is strictly a Hardware issue and not related to the game.

My AMD chip is slightly below the recommended specifications for this game, (1.8Ghz) but is the low end Pentium IV AMD "equivalent" that Gamersgate specifies as necessary for running the game. That said, at worst that should make the game painfully slow, not impossible.

I was able to get the game to run well enough to be enjoyable at average to above average speeds using the AMD (Athlon 64 3100+ rated at 1.8 Ghz socket 754), with 1 Gig RAM and the Radeon 256 video card, before it CTD'd after about 40 years of play. I don't know if that is acceptable performance or not by Paradox standard, but from my experience, not crazy bad for a new update.

Assuming everything is WAD, to be sure, you might want to ask GG to change the specs so that it is rated at 1 Gig RAM, for (AMD Athlon 64 3100+ ) Processors, a fairly common configuration of older generation computers using the AMD chip. I also swept my system clean and fixed up the registry, so perhaps I will try again and see if it will run with the AMD 3100+ and the 512 RAM, 256 video card, now.

If I can get the higher performance AMD chip (Athlon 64 3400+ rated at 2.4 Ghz socket 754) to work on my machine, and run the game with the 512 K RAM setup, I will let you know.

I tested again. Definitely the game that I downloaded from Gamersgate does not run with my old configuration.

1.8 Ghz AMD 64 Athlon 3100+
512k RAM
256k RAM Radeon 1550 video card

It does work reasonably well with a Gig of RAM.
 
Crashes about once every three hours. I noticed that my computer is trying to expand the virtual memory just as it crashes. Never had a problem with this process before. Seems to me it gets into some kind of loop and overloads the PF parameters. At some point it has so much stuff in there it just gives up.

I think this also might be related to the CTD upon quit. I think this because when I start the game, then quit immediatly it exits properly, just not when the game has been running for a while.

My 2 cents.
 
I expect Paradox to produce intriguing niche market strategy games that otherwise would not be made by large market manufacturers at all. Personally, I knew when I bought the game that my machine was operating at the very lowest level of recommended game specs, and I purchased knowing that I might have problems, because I have been around computers long enough to know that try as one might there is no one size fits all solutions, or compatability over the range of CPU's, video cards and operating systems, and more often than not something will crop up somewhere, for someone that is completely inexplicable -- its not as if they can do an 8 hour session on a game on each and every computer hardware and computer configuration that crops up.

I have had my complaints about these games in the past, but my experience is that they are always trying to do there best to get them to run for their customers.

Just look at Vista its been out for over a year and it is still a mess.

Customer support here is at least as good as anything I have gotten from any other software company. I suspect there was some unexpected software incompatabilty that has appeared in the new update, and they are presently working on the issues, as opposed to answering every single query about the game.

They generally get back on customer complaints when they have made progress on the solution, and I would rather have them working on the fix, as opposed to chatting on line trying to calm people down.
 
So, now I have gotten the second GIG of RAM working properly on my machine. As I suspected it was a hardware compatability problem. I haven't run the game with 2 gigs of RAM for an extended period of time yet, but my instinct is that its running faster and better. It seems like the game is heavily RAM dependent, and a large RAM upgrade seems like a solution to people not running an entirely compatible, or low end chip.

However, it still crashes on exit. :(

I'll update later when I have put the boots to the Cartheginians.
 
The game always crashes on exit. It's an annoying thing, but not "dangerous" as such.

The game is not a shooter game where you have to keep track of just a few characters and maybe a dozen bullets. The game has thousands of events checked for nations (dozens of those), provinces (hundreds of them) and characters (thousands of them), not to mention the plethora of armies and navies moving around. The game uses *lots* of resources.
 
Well its more annoying than most CTD's on exit, at least on my system, because on full screen mode it has trouble getting to desktop or bringing up Task Manager so that I can kill the process. I have to reboot. Now I am running it in a window, and that is less of a problem.
