Roxburgh was once one of Scotland's most important cities, on a par with other cities of the time such as Edinburgh or Stirling. The city was captured and recaptured numerous times during the Scottish Wars of Independence, and for a short time it acted as Scotland's de facto capital whilst the temporary residence of King David I. In 1460, during a siege by the Scots, King James II of Scotland was killed by an exploding cannon while attacking the castle. This event marked a turning point, and the castle was eventually destroyed to prevent it from falling into English hands again.
