Hi everybody,
I've made some strange experiences with Royal Marriages in the last few days, and I'd like to know if it's a game bug or a feature ;)
To the point: I'm playing Russia and have spend the last decades peacefully annexing or vassalizing european minors. I never had a problem having a Royal Marriage with either of them, be they Catholic, Protestant or Reformed. Amongst others, I made that little one-province minor just below Rome (which is now Turkish) a vassal of mine. To make it a vassal, I assume I must have had a Royal Marriage with them.
But it expired, and now they're still my vassal, but I cannot annex them 'cus I don't have a RM with them / the game thinks I do not have their religion (Thats what the game tells me when floating my mouse over the not-highlighted RM option). Why's that? I've tried to have a RM with Spain, they rejected, but the option is there. I have a RM with Austria, which is also catholic.
I'm wondering what's happening...

Orthodox countries can enter royal marriages with any other christian countries, whether they are catholic or protestant. After you vassalize a contry you no longer need a royal marriage to annex a contry, buy you need a common border with that country. I assume you don have one with that italian state (if it is below Rome than it's Naples, but at least originally it had 2 provinces).

AFAIK that's what the manual says, but incorrect.
Can someone confirm?
The point is, I cannot create a RM with them because the game says:
You can only have a RM with a nation of the same religion (orthodox).
So I assume that's also the reason why I cannot annex them.
Spain peacefully annexed Naples in my current game, what would be the border they share? France annexed Scotland, same question.

My comments

I've seen similiar situations - on both sides.

As England, I annexed Hannover with no problems. No common border.

As Austria, I couldn't annex Tuscany for the world until I fought my way to her borders, then annexation was as simple as pushing the button. BTW - I had lost the RM with Tuscany long since. The computer only requires the marriage to make vassalage - it doesn't seem to be a pre-req for Annexation.

I suspect that some countries have different rules depending on who is trying to annex them.

Spain and Naples actually have a common border. Remember that Spain owns Sicily, and as you can cross from Sicily to Apulia (Naples province) and vice versa on your feet it counts as common border.

No, the manual mixes the two up and state you need a common broder for vassalisation and not Annexing. The opposite is how it works.

And England almost always annexes Hannover-no common border.

No, England almost always inherits Hannover. It's NOT the same thing.

I read somewhere (the forum probably) that if both countries have a coast line it can be considered as a common border.
I hope I remember this right. :)

Where ever there are straights (ie where you can walk accros water) you share a border.

Basically, you don't need a RM to annex. A vassal cannot enter into any new RMs or Alliances.

Not entirely correct, once your vassal drops below +120 in relation, they are free to ally with everyone they like.

Now that i think about it you are right. Thanks for all the tips everyone.I too was a little cofused about dip annexes even after reading the exstensive section on that in the manual HA
