I'm a bit puzzled by recent events in my current (first) IGC regarding royal marriages

I'm playing England, and converted to counter-reformed catholic in 1500s (can't remember exactly when, as I'm now in 1780s). I didn't realise at the time that I couldn't then convert to protestant, which was unfortunate, as I'd been planning on spending the 17th century diplo-annexing the german states. still, never mind.

A couple of decades ago, while I was trawling around the map looking for unattached countries to ally with, i realised that ethiopia was available. I made friends, invited them successfully to alliance, and then noticed that the offer royal marriage option was available. a bit surprised, I tried it and was accepted. a bit later, they accept vassalisation

I was aslo concurrently allied with ragusa, who wouldn't take a royal marriage because they're protestant. fine, I thought - I'll wait for the edict of tolerance and can make friends with them in the meantime.

EoT comes along - still can't marry ragusa - when I hold the cursor over the offer marriage option it says 'can't do it, different religion'. When I go back to diplo-annex ethiopia (I know, not much point, but what the hell), my royal marriage has disappeared but they are still vassalised.

I now start making friends with bohemia, practically the only non-aligned state in the world. get the friendship up and - guess what? - even though they are protestant and exactly the same as ragusa, they accept a royal marriage.

next oddity. as soon as I marry bohemia, I go back to ragusa - still no joy. I go to the religion screen to check if they've changed religion in the interim, and they haven't, but I notice that the edict of tolerance now says 'no'. so i couldn't marry ragusa when the Eot was in effect, but I can marry bohemia when it has ended. And it didn't know it could end!

anyone any ideas

Well, Ethiopia is an Orthodox state - and therefore able to marry any Christian branch....

Ragusa is usually a vassal of Hungary - are you sure they weren´t a vassal of anyone (because then a marriage would be prohibited).

No, isn't anyone's vassal - Hungary doesn't exist, having been absorbed by Turkey.

And I get your point about Ethiopia being Orthodox, but once my RM had been dissolved,I couldn't get another one - it tells me we're different religions.

You're still counter-reformed, even after Edict of Tolerance? Did you convert back??? If you did, that might be a problem... but you still should be able to make royal marriages with orthodox countries.

And Edict of Tolerance doesn't end, it lasts till 1792, and cancels effects of Council of Treant.

Maybe... Ragusa is vassal of another country?

Try making RMs with all countries.. of all religions. This way you can tell what religions you can marry to and what not.

Were you trying to RM Ethiopia while they were still your vassals? Because that's not on - it isn't considered necessary, since they're already beholden to you. (They also can't RM anybody else)

What's happening with Ragusa just sounds weird. The hell with it - DoW the buggers :D

Should I now be Catholic again? This is my first GC or IGC, so I didn't know, but yes, I'm still counter-reformed

Mmmm.. but that's my point - it was in effect then it wasn't.
