Please help me: I installed EU2 but I cannot run it. I click on the desktop icon, and get the pointer/hourglass, but the program doesn't check the CD (it doesn't give me an error message if I have the wrong CD in the drive, and the CD read light never goes on) or load off the hard disk (to the extent that the HD light never goes on). After 10 seconds, the hourglass goes away and nothing happens. After a minute, I manually end the program from the close program (ctrl-alt-del) menu.

I have tried with music set on and off, and uninstalling and re-installing, and I have updated Directx and my video card drivers. Also, EU1 works great.

My system:
Pentium II 450 Mhz
128 M RAM
Windows 98
Voodoo2 3dfx V2-1000

Thanks for any help you can offer,

Varian

it sounds to me like a copy protection bug. I don't have the retail version, but I suppose they're using that Safedisk thing.

I don't think there is much that can be done except waiting for the patch.

Be sure that there is absolutely nothing running in the background (no AV software, no ICQ, no etc...)

Check your CD-ROM manufacturer's web site, they might have updated drivers or some rom upgrade.

If you have a CD-Writer and a regular CD drive, use the regular one.

If I think of something else during the night, I will try to post tomorrow morning.

I doubt this solution will work, but you could still try it, you have nothing to lose:

-create a temporary directory on your HDD and call it EU2CD.
-copy the entire CD to this directory.
-uninstall EU2.
-scandisk, defrag.
-re-install EU2 from the hdd directory, but keep the CD in your drive.
-try again...

No luck, but thanks for the suggestion.

Is there a chance that for some reason the cd-protection doesn't like the DVD part of my DVD/CDROM drive?

Also, do you know if the first patch will address this type of issue? I didn't see anything like this the feature list.

There is something we haven't tried yet: go to Control Panel, System, Performance, File-System, CDROM and in the box "Optimize read-ahead pattern for" change the default to "no-read ahead" and reduce the cache size to small.

The first patch *could* adress certain issue as Stratefy First the Publisher might include updated code for their copy protection thing (they dit it with the first patch of EU1).

Your DVD could be the problem. The copy protection software (Safedisk I think) is picky about wich cds work or not.

Can you try to install it on another computer (office, family, friend) and see if it works? If it does, it's copy protection. If it doesn't, your cd might be defective. In that case, return it for an exchange otherwise, you will have to wait for the patch.

You could also send an e-mail to: support@europa-universalis.com and post the link to your post, Patric (Paradox tech support) could have a solution for you. They had similar problems with Eu1.

If nothing works, you will have to think about getting a refund from the store, even if the box is openned, they could still agree to exchange it for a product of same value.

Let me know if anything works.

Hi:)
I had some problems today. I bought EU2 and it didnt start, and I found the problem to be binkplayer.exe which plays intro movies, maybe thats your case? If so, then alt-ctrl-del, and select binkplayer.exe ----> "end process" . Alternatively, rename "avi" folder to something else like avibackup.
Both ways worked for me:)

It could well be the copy protection - we had problems with EU1 too!
Go to the sticky "running problems" in this forum and alter the CD ROM cache size as suggested. That was proposed by a SF employee and might work.
If not then go to the Strategy First website and ask there for help with the Safedisk copy protection.
A SF Support employee does post here quite regularly and might help next time he comes :)

But since it worked already for several people ,maybe Patric, viper37 or Uglyduck could post it so that everyone can see? And of course fix it in patch?:)

I now have added it to Uglyduck posts (it's nice to be a mod now :D )

About the patch, I will have to ask Patric in the beta forum. We don't have the retail version of SF nor the latest movies, so it is hard for us to test this kind of stuff.

Thanks a lot for your help, so far, you have solved a few problems :)

Have you tried making a new shortcut? Or make sure that your CD drive is on Auto Notification and insert the CD and run it from the menu that appears?

Tried it all my good man. Ive spent the majority of my last two days trying to figure something out. The only hope I have is based on the fact that I am not a computer programmer, and perhaps they can work some magic when I call them or they finally e-mail me back.
