I just bought Crusader Kings II from humble bundle and when I click on the start game button I get the following message: This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way." I've deleted are redownloaded the game and verified all files but no joy here. Any help would be appreciated.

Install ALL these Microsoft modules:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=8328
https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=13523
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=52685

(run dxsetup.exe after extracting from this download)

Add ck2game.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.

Also if you have installed RadeonPro, or a gaming VPN app called Evolve, or the MSI Gaming App, or Duet, disable it as it clashes with this game.

IF NEITHER OF THOSE HELP:
DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

tried all of the above but no love. Hopefully these are the files you asked for. Thanks for the help!

Edit: BTW, HOI IV fires right up as it always has.

Were there any errors or problems running those 4 MS installers?

What antivirus app do you use?

You definitely don't have installed RadeonPro, or a gaming VPN app called Evolve, or the MSI Gaming App, or Duet ?

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach any other log files over 0 bytes, thanks.

I am using Windows defender (but it has the same boxes checked for pass through as HOI IV). There is no settings.txt file under CK2. In fact, I think I may have discovered the problem. When I compare to HOI IV there are many files missing! All CK 2 has are three subfiles: all CK 2 has are gfx, logs and dlc_signature. Corrupted download? I deleted the game from my steam library once and reinstalled....hmmm.

With Windows Defender you must add ck2game.exe to the Apps Allowed Through list in the Ransomware feature.

Just for clarification (assuming you have been looking at Documents/Paradox/CK2/) :

The CK2 folder in Documents is not your game installtion files folder and has thus nothing directly to do with your download or installation.
That folder is only for temporary files for the most part, apart from mods and save games and only misses a few folders as you couldn't even start the game yet.

The game files folder is in Steam/SteamApps/common.
Which is where in case of uninstalling you better delete the whole content of the CK2 folder manually before reinstalling.

PS: There were two questions in the above post you didn't respond to. Might be helpful for tech support if you do.
Good luck.
