I don't have my manual handy so I can't rummage through it to see if there is an answer in there to this question.

I'm playing Russia in a single player GC and I've thrashed my way south and east until I've conquered everything to the Turkish border. There are some obvious neutral territories to my east, 3 or 4 of which I can march into because my wars revealed them, but I have no colonists. None. Zero per year. I also have no conquistadors, but I can't worry about that because I can't control it. Colonists I figure I can do something about.

Do I need to change my religion? I remember reading somewhere about how to increase colonists, but like I said I don't have my manual. I'd rather expand east than take on the Turkish juggernaught right now, but for that I need colonists and a conquistador.

Apropos of nothing in particular, it is currently 1545 in my game.

U need a harbour to get colonists ... Once u have that Russia should soon get loads of colonists. Russia can't change religion, it's Orthodox which yields 1 settler a year. If u have a harbour, that is ...

Pretty soon u'll get hefty colonial dynamism too. If u have a harbour that is ...

Did BiB mention you need a harbor?
--you need a harbor. :D

BTW what is you land tech. Maybe get your tech high enough to explore w/ all armies.

That's why one of my first wars as Russia is against the Teutonic Knights so I can take Ingemanland and have a port. But don't take any other provinces from them because then Poland will have causis beli against you.

Thanks!

I'm at work so I can't check, but I think that the last province I took actually has a harbour down south, so there may be some colonizing in my future!

Otherwise, I guess some unfortunate nordic folks are about to meet a lot of poor educated Russian peasants with pointed sticks.

Charge!

Yah, take Ingermanland, then press east

You'll get conquistadors at some point... mulitple at once, if I remember correctly. You've conquered all four Khanates, right? Then east past Sibir lies the siberian corridor, full of riches, and leading to china...

Once you get over there, so much money you won't have a problem again

Unless you have taken any of Persia or Crimea you wont have a port down south. There are no ports on the Caspian sea, (certainly not on the Russian side). Like everybody else says you need Inglemann land (its where Pskov, Sweeden and the Tutonic order meet, top of the baltic)

You get a conquistador very early in the GC, and he dies in 1505. So you either need to blast through Siber and send him east, take Astrakhan and send him south, or use him to improve colonization chances in your northern colonies, after you take Ingermanland from the Teutons. I think that he should be essentially wasted, but I'm in the minority.

At the start of the game you get zero colonists until you have a port. At that point, you start getting one per year.

Russia gets more conquistadors starting in about 1550. You usually have one or two active at any given time.

Waiting for "explore with all armies" land tech will take a very long time,

You get colonial dynamism eventually, so you end up with more settlers. At the end of the game you are getting 6/year.

I agree with that! I have been focussing my research almost exclusively on Land Tech since day 1 and I'm only at level 6, so waiting til level 11 is not the answer.

I don't think it takes as long as you think. If you invest all $$ into land tech research you get it pretty quick. Albeit you wont have it by 1500,you still get it soon enough. It's land tech 11 correct? Or is it 16 I can't remember.

In the IGC, Russia gets a conquistador right away, who dies in 1505 as brucemo said. I was able to discover ALL the provinces to the east and make contact with China before this dude passed on. Gives the Russians a huge advantage in the far east.

I think you don't get automatically settlers once you have conquered a harbor. You have to build a wharf for that. But anyway, you get settlers soon enough (afetr you conquered siberia?), together with some conquistadors as far as I remember.

but i am playing as Russia in the GC(don't know what the IGC is), and i have taken ingerland and Estonia, and i get 1 colonist a year. it is not even 1500 yet(haven't attacked Sibir yet, but soon, every so soon, hehe)
what is this about the wharves? what exactly do they do(i know that one of Venice's provinces has one, otherwise, never actually seen one)?
Thanks

To get a wharf you need a certain naval tech level. Although which level it is escapes me at the moment (anyone care to divulge this info?)When you go to build a ship at the bottom of that info screen you will see a "build shipyard" button. This will only be lit up if you either are of sufficeint tech level to build one , or have at least 1000d to build it (it could be a little more depending on your current inflation rate).

That you do not get colonists by simply holding Ingersmaland or Estonia, both of which have ports. I was told that you need to have a wharf ( The golden anchors ).

Russia is Orthodox and therefor gets one colonist a year IF they own a port.

A shipyard (golden anchor) generates one colonist a year in addition to any others. Only one per year extra no matter how many shipyards you aquire.

Take Georgia. You will get plenty of colonists if you take Georgia. Of course, you may end up getting ganked by everyone else if you take Georgia (I did). But take Georgia. You don't need a 'wharf'.

Did I mention, TAKE GEORGIA!

newbie

Hi All!

Im a newbie and am playing the GC as Russia as many on this board recommend.

I have come to the point where i have taken Kazan, Golden Horde and Astrakhan. Sibir has been revealed to me (partially). I currently have no shipyards. The year is early 1500, and im going easy because ive read that conquistadors dont show up untill 1560. I will be taking a port shortly, my question however is this:

Can i completely take and annex all of Sibir, when i cannot see all of it? I cannot explore at the moment because i dont have the necessary tech or conquistadors.

So can I? or will i have to wait till those darned conquistadors show up?
