Saksenland - the House of Billung

Ah, the Germanies, lands so diverse in their cultures and language, yet somehow united under a single authority, if not unstably. Many a great tale to be told of this perserverent Germania out of amazement for its continued existence. A land brought together by God in Himmel, divided by man's barriers of tongue and custom. Of all these stories, none so captivate me as the story of my homeland.

Saksenland, the folk call it, Sachsen say the Baieren, Saxonia by hail us the Clergy. To the Nederlander, we are the 'German,' but to the Baieren, we are the farthest thing from 'German.' The Slavs detest us, the Friesen admire us, the Franks fear us. We are the children of Saxnot, for we are Saksen.

Our story begins on the evening after Christmas, when all was set in motion to trigger our rise to greatness. You see, our brave duke, Ordulf I Billung, had fallen ill once again shortly before. Being that he barely survived his plight the first time 'round, he took the steps to ensure that the Saksen would not be without a leader.

Ordulf had but one child, a son by name of Magnus, bore him by Ulfhild Olafsdottir. Magnus was a fairly intelligent young man and a fair diplomat by this point, and it seemed fitting that he would be the Regent named. However, Magnus and his soon to be Liege, Heinrich von Franken, King of the Germanies, Burgundy, and Italy, did not see quite eye-to-eye.

Magnus had never once bothered to learn to properly speak the High language, out of his own personal dislike for Baiern and Österreich. It was seen as the language of any educated intelligent man in Germania, however, and so he was frowned upon by von Franken and many of the High nobles.

A rough path lies ahead for the Saksen. Are we ready to face the future?

During his first few months as regent, Magnus hid away from the world. Not many can have such power thrown upon them as an entire duchy in the Germanies, with a father who was always either ill or absent on his ventures. There were very few that he ever confided with during this period, one being his wife, Kunigunde, and the other being one of his cousins, Ekbert van Braunschweig, the count of Friesen. Very little went on between December and January, both within the Germanies and in the outside world.

Gradually, the people of his court, most notably Kunigunde, became concerned about Magnus' detachment from the world.

-Lüneburg, January 18th, 1067-

Magnus stood at the window of his ducal hall, looking over the empty hills that dotted this realm to which he now had a duty to lead.

"Magnus" he heard a voice from behind him calling. He turned to see Kunigunde, looking worried as always.

"Something bothers you, my love?" he asked.

Kunigunde looked away, sighed, and said, "You're really starting to worry me." She paused and took a deep breath, then continued, "I know that you're stressed, but don't hole yourself up forever. It'll all work out in the end."

Magnus turned back to his window, looking over the fields. "I suppose you're right."

"Your father will recover soon, and return to his position." Kunigunde reassured him, as she took hold of his hand. "In the mean time, why not relax a bit, hmm?" Magnus was silent, distant, unresponsive. Kunigunde tugged on his hand to get his attention.

"I know what will cheer you up." She said, and grinned, leading him up the stairs. They were nearly to the bedroom door when a knock was heard at the heavy double-doors at the entrance to the hall.

"My liege, my liege, please open the door! The Duke is near death, his last request to see his son, please hurry!"

Magnus let go of Kunigunde and rushed out to the door, tossing the bar aside and crashing through with full force.

"My liege, we haven't much time! If you wish to see your father alive one last time, take horse and make heading for the monastery-" Magnus had already climbed into saddle and left. The messenger quickly turned his horse to follow, leaving Kunigunde alone on the green.

"Godspeed, Magnus" she whispered into the night.

-That same evening, at the monastery-

Magnus rushed into the small room, and looked down at the frail and pallid man that lay on his deathbed. Surrounding him were what remained of the Family Billung; Magnus' Mother, Ulfhild, and Aunt Ida.

"Magnus... My son..." said Ordulf, his voice toneless and rasp.

"I am here, father." Magnus replied, kneeling down by his father's deathbed.

"The end, it draws near... No longer have I even the strength to open my eyes, to see-" his sentence interrupted by a bout of coughing, each violently shaking what remained of the once-proud Ordulf. "I will not have my people continue to hang on by a thread to their dieing leader, and so..."

"Yes, father?"

"I have decided... that you shall be crowned tomorrow... permanent Duke of Saksen..."

... To Be Continued...

Ordulf passed on the very eve of the coronation, leaving Magnus an empty shell of a man. Unfortunately, now was an extremely inopportune time to be detached from the world...

The Duke of Bohemia had mustered enough money and gut to declare himself a King, independent from the Germanies. Heinrich von Franken, not willing to let his kingdom slip away, quickly mobilized all of his armies to invade Bohemia at once.

Lüneburg

"My liege, a reiter approaches!" shouted the watchman.

"Open the gate." Magnus replied. The guards pushed the heavy doors aside and allowed the messenger to enter the wooden fortress. The man was mustached and dressed in the finest of Baierisch robes, easily the first things that set him apart from the plainly garbed Saksen that surrounded him.

"I come with a message for Magnus Billung!" the reiter announced, displaying a parchment high above his head.

"I am he." Magnus said.

"His Majesty, Heinrich vô Franken, requests that you mobilize your soldiers in service of the Regnum Teutonicorum." the reiter said, as he handed Magnus the paper.

"Is that what it says on the paper?" Magnus questioned.

The reiter nodded.

"Do you take me for an illiterate?"

The reiter replied, "Give me an answer", now becoming annoyed. There was a moment of silence as Magnus considered.

"Tell von Franken that I most respectfully decline."

"A sachsen doing anything respectfully is a new concept to me." leered the reiter as he backed out of the gate and out of view.

Which in Latin would be referred as either Rex Teutonicorum or Rex Germanorum at that point.
