Save and load game problems HoI2 DD

[Mr. G]

When I try to load saved games I get errors like thise;
"--- ERROR: (Leader unexpected field) 'max?? skill = 3' Line 251682 file = scenarios\save games\[file name].eug ---
Do you still want o continue?"

{Cancel} {Try agin} {Ignore}

When I press one of the bottoms the game craches to Windows, no matter of which bottom I press.
If the game is saved on my 1st computor I can't be loaded on any other computor. If it is saved on any other computor (for eg. my laptop) and I tryes to load it on my 1st computor, errors like above occurs. Same file on my laptop however works :?

I do not have any other backgrund process running (F-secure 2006), than on my laptop (wher it works), but some divers.

Playing HoI 2 DD 1.2. No modds, have reinstalled the game without any sucess

Please help me…pretty please…with sugar on top

If this text is accutate from the error you get, then something very fishy is going on.

Those square boxes are an indication that a character code was used for which there is no representation in the font that Windows uses. Which definately cannot possibly happen when the game has been properly saved. Between 'max' and 'skill' there should have been one single '_' character, not two unprintable ones and a space.

You say you can save and load successfully on your laptop, but that the same saved game gets this (or similar) error on the PC you listed the DXDiag for. This implies that the actual contents of the save game file is correct (thus 'max_skill' on line 251682). You could do me a favor and load this particular save game, on your laptop, into notepad. Use the goto menu option to enter the specified line number, and check the actual contents of that line. If it indeed says 'max_skill', then we have a problem on your main computer.

I suspect this, especially so because it's an older AMD Athlon system with a VIA chipset. Especially the older VIA chipsets had some hardware troubles. One of those troubles was that it was possible, under full load of the chipset, to actually alter the data stream when transferring data to or from the hard disk. I fear that this is happening to you now.

Go into your configuration panel from Windows, double click on system management, then computer management. That should bring up a new screen. Select device manager, and locate the 'VIA Bus Master IDE Controller' in the tree that now becomes available. Right click on it, and select 'properties'. Go to the device driver tab page. Press the update driver button, and follow the directions on the dialog box. When you arrive at the selection on how to locate new drivers, select the manual option. Do not let windows look for drivers itself. It now should present you with a new screen. Select the 'show all hardware' option, then select the top manufacturer from the list. This should be the (standard) one. In other words, the generic drivers. Select the standard IDE controller from the right hand list. Press next, and follow the directions on screen to replace the VIA bus master driver with the standard, generic IDE one.

At some point Windows will ask you to reboot. Do that. After reboot, copy the save game file from your laptop again to your main system, fire up hoi 2 and try to load it. Do not attempt to load the current file that's present on your hard drive. We need to make sure that a correct save game file is actually placed on your main sysem.

On my laptop line 251682 = "end year 1942" (two more lines down then om my PC). On may skill it says "max_skill = 3".
