So I want to import an old character from one of my old games into a new game, however nothing seems to work when testing the edit. I created a test game, even went as far to make a character of the same culture, ethnicity and sex, just different in appearance.

But my edits didn't work. I have it uncompressed, and I tried copying the dna and properties, just doesn't work.

What am I doing wrong?

are you sure youre editing the right file?
did you remember to save the new file and reload the savegame ingame?

Yup, gave them unique names, saved the file, and then started the game and loaded it.

I think thats how it is done, I haven't really found a relevant tutorial anywhere specific to what I was looking for.

Without more context I can't offer much, but my first thought would be to ensure you're editing the right person, of course. Sometimes property changes do funny things. But DNA, provided that both characters are of the same culture (which is cul="whatever" and g_cul="whatever", if it is different from cul), of course should be visible right away.

Speaking of cul and g_cul, the game makes some funny assumptions about those entries sometimes, and often leaves them out, for example father is english, and as long as the child is too, it leaves the cul entry off. With that in mind, perhaps add those lines manually if you haven't, particularly if they differ from one another of course, or from the parent, if there is any parents listed.

Just an FYi, though I imagine you know this, it's not so much about unique names. You need to be sure they have unique character IDs...like 125000, or some otherwise unique character ID

Sure, if you could post the guy you're looking to import as he exists in the original game, and then perhaps post his entry as he is in your test game. Can't promise I'll spot anything meaningful, but it can't hurt to look.

(EDIT: Also, are you running mods (at least any that effect portraits) or vanilla? I don't really run mods, but vanilla or at least unmodded portraits i can test directly in my own game)

Ahh, still though, the process should be similar. So, the properties and dna list is a long string. Each character in the string (mostly) controls specific pieces of the portrait. So, one of them is, for example, hairstyle.

DNA/properties is sometimes finicky though, changing one character in the string seems to not always behave as expected when I've done it, which is why, as I think you were doing, when messing with it I have copied the full dna and property entry for a character whose look I wanted, to an existing character (whether ruler designed, or within an ongoing game or something)

Yeah, id's are different, as well as the same culture.

I am running CPRplus.

The file now has the dna of the character I want, but when I check in game she still has the old appearance.

The first is who I was editing.

I was having the same issue since the last patch. I just had to be really careful and have multiple backup saves from the same date. I usually do save edits to have my vassals with coats of arms that match up with their titles' flag (Lekapenos and Trebizond), and I kept getting the game to either crash or have no population when I loaded. My advise is to section off the more controllable areas that you're going to edit, so if you're changing a dynasty from House Whosit from Whocares to House Rico Suave, stop once you made your main changes, then load, then see if you're working. Then do another backup save and continue.

Okay, so that post helps. First thing I see is that it looks like you're trying to make the edits at the very beginning of the save file. Rather than make the change there under the info that defines more you as the player, rather than the character itself, you want to make your changes specifically on your character entry in the save file, which is much further down in the save file than those entries there at the very top.

So, because the save file is huge, do a search (usually the hotkey is ctrl-f) for either the character's name, in this case Paula I believe, or, more specifically, search for the character ID, which is 1069448. Now, there's several places where both the name and the ID are used in the save for various reasons.

Remember that if you search by name, you may come across other characters named Paula; you want the entry that has both the correct character name AND the correct ID number. What you're looking for looks similar to this:

Code:
       2612176=
       {
           bn="Ermengardis"
           fem=yes
           b_d="771.10.12"
           fat=2601293
           mot=2608659
           att={2 2 5 1 1}
           tr={198 }
           rel="catholic"
           cul="welsh"
           g_cul="pictish"
           dnt=1000101172
           dna="vtggunlxkoj"
           prp="jl0hbk00000000000000000000000000000000"
           fer=0.400
           health=5.400
           prs=0.730
           piety=1.020
           claim=
           {
               title=b_aarschot
               pressed=yes
               weak=yes
           }
           emp=2617425
           host=2617425
           guardian=2610611
           flags=
           {
               ze_child_conscientious_events=778.4.25
               recent_treatment=778.5.21
           }
           md=
           {
               modifier="in_seclusion"
           }
           focus_date="777.10.18"
       }

Now of course it won't look EXACTLY like that, your character will have different information in it, extra stuff, etc. But it will be similar. Under that entry, notice the "dna=" and "prp=" lines. Make your changes there. Save the file, and then reload the game in CK2. Depending of course on what you're changing, it should then reflect the changes. Like I said though, the properties one sometimes is funny...note for example all the 0's in it...some of the fields will have no effect on certain characters.

With that said, if you're just copying an exact dna and prp entry from a different save, it shouldn't matter. It should mostly reproduce the character's look without issue (clothes sometimes are different though, for example).

Hopefully this helps!

Oh, I am suppose to put it down further?

I'll check that out later.

Edit:
So just so I don't clog up the forum, is there a program for making a map of your playthrough?

So I just got to checking to see if it works now, and nope.

Could mods cause interference or something? Honestly have no idea why it doesn't work now that I changed the correct bits.

Something to note: the character you see on game loading is NOT the character you see when you play.

The stuff at the top of the file shows a quick preview character when you load your save. That’s what you were editing earlier.

The stuff further down that people pointed you to is your actual character. Editing that will work, but it won’t change the preview you get when you load your save. But when you jump in to play, it should work.

If you want a playthrough map, just press F11. It’ll save a bitmap of the current world.

Nah, I figured out that I was editing the wrong place earlier, but my issue is that I'm still running into problems.

The only way I can find a solution I figure, is a step by step guide, otherwise I have no idea what I did wrong.

You're doing something wrong. I just did it in the middle of a game I was playing to show you. This guy Wladyslaw is 16 years old. I stole his portrait and DNA and gave it to my character which you can see in the 2nd picture.
The reason we look slightly different is because I didn't remove my scars or my one eye. I also wear a crown as I'm his King while here wears a cap. You can see in both pictures that my image has changed as his liege. My character also has a mustache normally which I did remove manually, he appeared as he does in the picture but with a beard. That, and the scars and crown are separate from his portrait and DNA info.

I know I'm doing something wrong, I just have no clue what that is.

Thats why i want someone to go over it step by step with me, because clearly I am being an idiot and doing something wrong.

Which, given that I accidentally saved a flag as a png instead of a tga and messed up everyone's flags, wouldn't be surprising.
