I recently got a new computer and installed and patched the game and started playing. I want to change a small thing in the save file, but I can't find it. I go into:
My computer--> C: --> Programfiler --> Paradox Entertainment --> Europa Universalis 2.

Then I come to the file with all the map, music, scenarios etc, but I can't find the save files? Are they stored somewhere else on Vista? Hope anyone can help me.

Vista resists attempts to add or modify files in the Program Files folder, so it creates a 'virtual store', where those are kept. This includes the EU save files. They can be found at:

[Your Drive Letter]:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment [or Strategy First, depending on release]\Europa Universalis 2\scenarios\save games\

For example, for me they would be in:

C:\Users\Slavick3000\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Strategy First\Europa Universalis 2\scenarios\save games\

(Disclaimer: I got that path on my Windows 7 machine. The Vista path may be slightly different, though I am almost certain its the same. Haven't used Vista in a while now.)

Ok I found the file,(it was where it was supposed to be, I just forgot they was saved in the scenario folder), but now I got a new problem. I added the changes and pressed "save" and I get an error message that I can't save the file.

Anyone can help me with this part of the problem too?

Edit: My computer didn't know the file tyoe "EUG", but it worked fine opening it in "notisblokk". No ide what that program is called in english, but it's a very basic writing program, with no chance of makeing changes to writing, underlining, or anything fancy. The only costumication that can be done is small and big letters.

I also tried opening it in other writing program and that worked fine also, but still I can't save it. Since I own this computer and I'm the only one useing it I have all administrator rights, so that can't be it.

Ok, haveing the same files as in teh game was obviously a cooincidence. I tried working out a work around and it looked liek I made it. But the games didn't change, so I tried and delete the save games, but they still worked so they wher NOT in the scenario folder where they was supposed to be anyway. So back to square one to look for them :(

Did you check the location Slavick3000 posted?

If they are not there search for *.eug in the vista search option. Vista search is a bit annoying. You have to search for all files, not just the indexed files. If that does not work try to search for the country you played when you saved the game.

I added the changes and pressed "save" and I get an error message that I can't save the file.
Right click on the file or folder and disable "read only".

I decided to uninstall the whole game, (I had only played 1 country for about 20 year so not to much of a loss), and then install it again in another location outside from the program file folder.

And now the save files are in the right place and I can easily edit them as much as I want. :)

Things are never easy. Aftre playing a while I decided to take a look on the leaders list, just to see if I would get any leaders soon. Apperntly I would get one in 1486, wich was only 2 years ahead.

I did NOT edit anything, but when exited the file changed the name from leaders.spa to just leaders. I looked at a few others too, and they did the same. The icon also changed from unknown to notepad on the once I opened. I changed the name back to leaders.spa, leaders.eng and so on. But when I got to 1487 I still hadn't got any leaders. I saved and played on fast forward. By 1492 I still hadn't got any leader.

I decided to go back into the save file and change the name back to just leaders like the game autochanged it too, but it didn't help. Still no leader showed up.

Now I KNOW I looked at these files earlier, I also know they changed like these once did, but it did NOT change anything in game. So why aren't my leaders showing up? And what can I do to make them show again? (I got a save from 1485 that I can use to get them if they would only work). Now it was one thing when I couldn't change small things in the save games, but I can't play a game that refuses to give leaders to many countries, just becouse I looked at the files without editing them. I love playing colonial games, and I looked at both Spain, Portugal, England and France. I wonder how the game would look in the end if none of them got their scripted explorers and conquistadors. Any input on the subject would be highly appriciated.

Also, the game seems to randomly shut down every now and then(sometimes it seems to disrupt the signals from the computer to the screen as it says it got no signals, but I can still hear the music. Only way to fix it seems to turn off the computer manually), wich leads me to saveing every few months so I won't have to play long streches over again. This is rather annoying though, especially when I have ot restart the computer. Anyone know what causes it?

Do you have "Hide file extensions for known file types" (or whatever it's called in Vista) on? There is likely a hidden ".txt" at the end of the filename which is being hidden.

How do I see if I have it hidden and how do I change it? If I mouse over the files it still says SPA-file, FRA-file and so on, but not sure how to make them show up like the other files.

EDIT: I found out how to make them show the file, but it still don't make the leaders show up in my game :(
Edit2: I think my save games might be corrupt. I don't get any leaders neither in 1486 ir if I let it run to 1495, wher I shoudl get more, but I tried starting a new game as both Portugal, France, Castille and Spain in 1492 and the leaders all showed up as they should.

So I guess that is my 4th try at a WC that ends becouse of computer problems. I don't think I can go through those first 70 years again as Spain(I picked them for an easy go on my first attempt for world conquest), again for the 5th time.

I'm starting to hate vista more and more. I even bought xp to this machine so I wouln't have problems like that, but apperntly the guy at the store couldn't get all the drivers for it, so I had to settle for this piece of crap.

So it's not a problem with the leader files.

That seems to be the problem.

OR!!

Does the leader you want have a "sleep" command in the leader file. If he has this command than you need a trigger to wake him (usually an event has to fire).

No need to start over. Just copy-paste all the leaders you want into the save-game file under the entry "leadertable { ... }". It will look something like this:

Code:
leadertable = {
        historicalleader = {
            id = { type = 6 id = 9263 }
            name = "Vancouver"
            category = explorer
            rank = 9
            fire = 2
            shock = 2
            movement = 3
            startdate = { year = 1791 month = january day = 0 }
            deathdate = { year = 1798 month = january day = 22 }
            }
}

Can I copy paste the whole Spain leader file in there, and they will show up as they should for the rest of the game?
Yes, I believe so.

Although they are in a bit different form, so if it does not work, you might have to rearrange some of the entries. But I don't THINK you need to do this.

Code:
historicalleader = {
		id = { type = 6 id = 2143 }
		category = general
		name = "Casimir"
		startdate = { year = 1499 }
		deathdate = { year = 1527 }
		rank = 0
		movement = 2
		fire = 3
		shock = 2
		siege = 1
	}
Code:
historicalleader = {
            id = { type = 6 id = 9263 }
            name = "Vancouver"
            category = explorer
            rank = 9
            fire = 2
            shock = 2
            movement = 3
            startdate = { year = 1791 month = january day = 0 }
            deathdate = { year = 1798 month = january day = 22 }
            }

Thanks alot Mats. Copy pasting the leaders in worked like a charm. Now I only need to stop England declearing war on Aragon every 5 years, (they have a CB on them since Aragon owns Wales, and I had nothing to do with it), and Aragon declearing war on France or Brittany while still in war with England. I will be SO happy when the event that makes me in herit Aragon kicks in. Maybee it can stopp the endlesss wars.
