saving problems

I'm playing 1.03b. At each game, after some 3 years of so, when my nation (Italy) reaches some 250 CI, suddenly my monthly save becomes heavier. If normally it takes just a handful seconds to save, this time grows to a few minutes, then to some 15, and finally it becomes impossible to save, and the computer either blocks, or quits from the game. How can I do to resolve this?

This is a bug known as the expanding save game.
There is a sticky thread in the General disussion forum that provides a work around for you.

You may want to just install 1.04 however, as the problem should be fixed in it.
Just be warned that I don't know if the savegame will be compatible with the new version.
