I got the idea to make Muslim factions playable by adding new entries to the eug files. I made one for the Seljuks to 1066_scenario.eug, and it seemed to work perfectly fine, I could start a game as them and play (but not create titles for some reason). But when I saved the game and tried to reload, they became unplayable again. The eug for the save file used the old header without the new entry for the Seljuks. Does anyone know why that is?
 
Non-feudals and non-christians are not supposed to playable. The game will not save their data.
In other words -- by design.

Weird forum you picked to post this. Didn't you notice it hasn't been used in almost two years?
 
Well, it's the only thing that said "scenario", and if we're not supposed to use it why isn't it locked?

I did make it playable, so it doesn't seem that impossible. It just seems to be using something other than the original .eug to make the save file. If I could just find what that is, I could make it work for all cases.

And there is that old mod that made all the pagan and muslim kingdoms playable too.
 
The savefile is just updated whenever you save, and in the process it removes all nonvalid tags (i.e. any held by republics, bishoprics, msulims, pagans, etc.). Unless you know how to hack the exe, there is no "fix". The old mod did precisely that, hack the game code to make all realms be treated equally.

You can easily trick the game into letting you load it as a republic, or a muslim, but the game is not designed for it. You might run into issues like not being able to create new titles, being unable to give titles to vassals, getting events that are supposed to be AI only, etc..
 
Hmm, well that is bothersome. But I have been able to just make the same change to the save file and have it work again. I've also been able to grant titles, so the game seems to be mostly functional this way.

Someone more industrious than me could probably make a script that just adds in the desired nations to all the save files after the game closes.
 
Not really -- there's no hook for it in the game code.
Realistically the only way to make muslims fully playable is by doing a major overhaul of the game.
Combine Catholics and Schismatics :)p) into one 'Christian' tag using the catholic tag, and make muslims use the 'orthodox' tag.

Or make sunni muslims 'catholic' and shite muslims 'orthodox', and group all Christians under the old 'muslim' tag. Then take care of the Papacy, Knight Orders, and other religious events.
