So as I'm playing, I use the CK2 Plus mod, and occasionally the screen will freeze with purple lines criss-crossing it. The music keeps playing, and I can move the cursor about, but I can't click on anything, I can't alt-tab, and I can't ctrl+alt+del.
I have to manually shut down the tower, wait a moment, then reboot it. Win 7 tells me that it suffered a problem, blah blah blah, it boots up as normal, and I can restart CK2 without a problem and even pick up where I left off (I have it save on every year).
It's just such a weird issue and this is a new computer. I can run Battlefield 3, Starcraft 2, and other high-end games without any problems for hours on end, so when CK2 gives my computer a heart attack after 45 minutes, I get suspicious. The problem doesn't happen every 45 minutes on the dot, but I do experience one of these types of crashes at least once a night, after playing for 2-3 hours.
