As I remember in the first SoTS you could direct your weapons fire at select locations on enemy ships or stations...
Am I missing something because it seems to me that no matter what I target with the target cursor the fire goes all over the place and not at what I directed to be fired on?
It would be nice to be able to knock out engines or weapons.
If this is the case Kerberos please bring it back...

Having played over 300 turns I can't think of a single combat where my weapon fire hit anywhere near the section or fixture I wanted to hit...example...fighting the Ghost Ship and targeting the engine section and having all ships shooting more or less hitting the bridge section...now that ship is looooong...ships equiped with FC command sections should be able to hit nearer than that....:(

I think they generally hit whichever part is closest to firing ship

So the only practical aiming I've found is get behind them to hit engines, in front of them to try to target bridge, or middle to try to blast out middle (and thus most guns)

You can only selective fire on one of the three sections. Your ghost ship example is a bad one because the ghost ship is a leviathan. Leviathan's don't have sections, you can't take out their engines or their command section. I selective fire all the time and it works quite well. But only on cruisers and dreadnoughts.

Doubleclick the location you want them to fire at, or doubleclick a weaponsystem it doesn`t matter. If selecting a weapon its circled red for target. Seriously it works 100%. If you have shielded ships and enemy has shieldbreaks kill those turrets = epic win :D

Wrong! They attempt to shoot the position you selected.

This. Try with ships aremed with beamers to target a certain turret (again as castus said: double click - it was the same in SOTS prime) on the enemy ship (of course they need to be able to shoot that part) - turret stripping FTW (i love that tatic against e.g. early conflicts with liir - they have only one large mount and it is quite easy to strip and so considerably lower the fire power of their armor designs very fast)

Great..that helps a lot. I never thought about the Ghost Ship be a leviathan so that makes sense as it doesn't have sections per se.
Documentation is a little lacking so I didn't see any reference to double clicking....thanks
