well, you may get a senior citizen celebrity or guru genius or something which would be very beneficial to bring for the short time they live. spreading genius to your colonists would be huge.

The thing about the applicants is they are randomly generated and you are stuck with what you get. Some of them will be seniors. Many will have other negative traits. That is why the starting applicant pool for the various sponsors is so important. It means you get more colonists with good traits so you set your filters to exclude those with bad traits. This is one of the cases where the streamers are mostly doing it wrong. They should definitely be hand picking their first passenger ship and probably their second. Most don't even apply filters for negative traits. If you have 100 applicants and can only take 12 filter out the bad ones.

I hear you. It seems to me picking the 12 most qualified founders is the most critical part of the early game, as the boosts they can give you will compound throughout the colonization process.

3-5 botanists, 2 medics rest unskilled.

Build hydroponics/farm, medic, grocer, diner, fountain, 2 residentials
Wait for them to have a baby, have rocket ready on earth once it happens and immediatly ship in the next people. propably engis or geologists to become self sufficient.

that works grate ifyou wantto play the meta way but sum of us do play games like this with a rp bent.

if you look at Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson wich is a book considerdto be one ofthe most scyintifick and best reserched interms of how a mars calanie would be most of the peaple going are older 30-50s sum aproching 60s wich i feal is more realistick then say sending abunce of 20 year olds.

Personal plans re: senior citizens is to build a small old-folks dome with nothing but housing and passive comfort stuff. They can go outside to get boxes of food, right? ;)

Besides the already mentioned and highly unethical Soylent Green use, there is a breakthrough tech that allows senior citizens to work and make children. And another one with the catchy name "Project Phoenix". Live begins at 60 on Mars.

i cannot speak highly enough of the old folks dome.. i tried that when i figured out how to do it, and it is fun.. fun fun... :D

also the breakthrough that allows senior citizens to still work.... OMG... life changer...

also, i need a mod that enables all breakthroughs to be found in a single game.

It would be nice if seniors could still work some jobs. I mean, a lot of older people want to (and do) stay active and the kind of people that sign up to go to mars would definitely fall into that group I would think. They may not want to work all day in a machine parts factory any more, but they also probably don't want to sit in their smart homes all day doing nothing....they might be very interested in being a bartender or working in the grocer or dealing black jack in the casino.

After all gravity is lower and that means seniors can walk faster?

Also there just should be an option to send people home to earth. Probably after a breaktrough techwall.

Semi-related, would it make sense to include the option to send senior citizens home? Early on in the game you might really need those extra population slots that are currently filled by people not doing anything who're just going to die after a dozen more sols. Plus they're also just wasting precious resources. From what I could tell, there isn't a cost to sending an Earth-sick character back to Earth, why not let us send seniors back as well to retire rather than having the only way to get rid of them people managing them?

Put them in a low service dome and if they aren't martianborn they will become earthsick real quick. Then they will leave right quick on their own.

"What do you mean by some missing old people? No one is missing, everyone is right here on Mars, with us, one way or the other. Can you believe nobody actually left Mars for nearly 200 years? They love it here. Come let's make a quick field trip together, let me show you our brand new food production equipment first."

some Martian Mayor probably.
