If you don't know what Hamachi is/how it works, read this thread first.

Basically it allows you to connect to an EU2 game per LAN, removing the need to set up your router/firewall properly for Vnet/IP. It also removes the need to gather in Vnet which is not very reliable. Not to mention you get rid of the annoyance of vnetters joining your games. Basically, it means password protected games without router troubles!

-------------

So,
  • Since some players simply can't join EU2 games because of router troubles
  • Since Vnet is not reliable enough
  • Since Vnet has other troubles, like vnetters joining your game

I would like to propose to make Hamachi as our standard of organising/joining games.
To make this work, a GM simply can make a hamachi network group with a password, to be publicised in the first post of the thread. All players then join this network group with Hamachi. Et voilá, all Vnet troubles are solved! Everyone can connect to the host by pressing 'LAN in the MP section of EU2 (instead of 'Internet' or 'Valkyrienet'.

If everyone would do this, everyone could join and participate in games without the troubles mentioned before.

Discuss.

As someone who needs hamachi to plan online, I certainly think it's a good idea. It really is easy to install and get working. It's a small program that will be installed and running in a few minutes.

Help those less fortunate than you, install Hamachi today!

Till now i only used it for a few Aoe 2 games, and as a positive it indeed solves a lot of firewall issues.

On the minus i did experience more lag than i normally do. This could have just as easily be the fault of the host but i remembered that the same host did fine with a eu2 game he (or was it a she....) hosted.

Also we had still some connection problems , but i dont remember of what kind...

But ill wait for my definitive answer for tomorrow wenn it will be tested full pull in sundays game

It's already a standard in BF4. It's a easy program to use, and it does prevent timedemanding connection issues between the host and the players.
All games should have it. :)

Edit, and yes the LAN hosting is alot more handy now.

FAL,

It would be best, actually, if we had one common network. Then, if games are simultaneous (rare) and happen to be hosting simulaneously (rarer still), you just use the drop down menu and select your host.

I humbly suggest HoGIsMagnificent as the network name and ILoveHoG as the password, but Vnet and EU would also work.

All,

We could also name it Animal Farm, which is what our forum should be called too. It is without a doubt the most accurate title for EU II MP.

I made the network, pass eu

This should also be the title for the upcoming tsunami game on the new map :D

I made a response in another thread but heaven knows where it was so I will insert it in this thread as well

Bear in mind, that most probably inside Hamachi group you`ll be able to access each other computer`s shared resources via explorer.

Who decides which resources "are shared" and how can I see if mine are?

You decide this by sharing directories in windows yourself. Click right mouse button on a directory, choose 'properties', then you will see a tab 'sharing'. There you can make the directory shared for other network users.

You will recognise shared directories in windows explorer since they come with a 'hand' symbol/picture.

You don't need to. As I told Daniel over ICQ, if you go to Network Connections in the control panel and open the Hamachi connection, you can turn file sharing off.

Since it's already created, I plan to use fraesenet for my game too :D

EDIT: there's a limit on the players, so I can't do this.

Will the network always be available to connect to?

Yes, unless Fraese chooses to close it

We played with Hamachi in the Animal farm game yesterday.

From the perspective of a normal player it was no success. We had a lot of crashes, more than what is normal I say.

I know of course nothing about how many crashes we would have had, had we not used Hamachi. And I do not know much of the connections of them participating in that game either.

This is true, but it was unfortunately not a very informative test either way.

In the initial hour, my laptop crashed twice, both times I noticed the temperature in the high 50's, which leads me to think those two first rehosts were from overheating.

After I moved into the shade, Mr. Lifford dropped IIRC for a rehost, HG & Miroul CTD'd for a rehost, and then HG CTD'd again. KJ also dropped conn after tabbing into ICQ. There may have been another but I think that's it. Mr. Lifford wasn't using Hamachi if I understand correctly, but was instead joining through vnet. I don't think CTD's are related to Hamachi. Apart from CTD's and Lifford, there's just John, and that was partly his fault if I'm right about him having tabbed. Not much to pin on Hamachi.

The positives, then: we played most of the game at normal speed, and I didn't get much talk about lag at all. File transfers were quite fast. Mac was behind a router/firewall, and played with no problems.

It appears a hamachi network has a limit on the amount of players that can join it.

Therefore, we cannot use one network for the entire community. Each gamemaster needs to make it's own network for each game.

Fraese, what happened was that my 56k connection disconnected. Every 3-4 hours it does that, disconnects from the internet automatically for some reason, so I try to remember to reconnect on rehosts. But I forgot to do so, and thus lost connection.

However, this is the interesting part. After I was disconnected, and then reconnected, and then tabbed back into the game, my date began to move again. Player chat also began feeding onto my screen. I don't think they were able to hear my chat, nor was I anywhere near the current date. I finally lost connection to the host for real after about a month of that. But perhaps it wouldn't have if I had reconnected to the internet faster? Or if they would've paused the moment I crashed(not that I advocate pausing for this reason at all, unless it's proven that it can prevent a disconnection while using hamachi).

That's really interesting. I did pause, for some time; perhaps not long enough. I may even have clicked the drop button on you!
