I will create a minimod that adds ship names to the countries that do not posses any and extend the existing ones with a few more. For the first version I will create WW2 only, then extend it to WW1.

I will also reinclude the prefixes to the ship names, so you will see again USS Liberty, KMS Bismarck and HMS Ark Royal.

I will release the first version of the mod when it is done (few weeks perhaps, I have some exams to take in the meanwhile as well.).

Please feel free to contribute your ideas!
 
Nice to see this, and instead of calling it a mod, you should call it an add-on or an expansion or something, seems more appropriate, but meh that's me. :)

If the developers are interested, I would be more than happy to contribute this mod to the full game.
 
I have found a good source for ship name prefixes on Wikipedia. I will use it as a starting point however if anyone finds any mistakes among them please report, so that the mistakes in these first released version will be minimal as well.
 
If you finish with the Darkest Hour side, there are ongoing talks with adding more ship names in Kaiserreich too. If you wish to contribute there too that'll be great :) (Shameless I know) :p

It's not much of coding. If you can locate the unitnames.csv in your Darkest Hour\Mods\Darkest Hour Full\db folder then you can immediately add new names or overview the existing ones. Also you have to note that if you rewrite the unitnames here, you will have to rewrite them in the '36 or '14 scenairo folder as well if they already exist at the start of the game.
 
Well its not just that, its coming up with the right names for the ships, or creating new ones for non-existant or ships unlikely to exist under usual circumstances. e.g. Greek Carrier/Battle Fleet in 1914.

I'm not good with names an all, and hmm, rewriting the scenario file too eh?

1. Yes, that's why I asked you to contribute. Like I see you are from Wales, so it would be nice if you have given me some proper ship names. And if you create Wales a-historically and have enogh time to build ships you may see a WIS Arthur or WIS Cymru (WIS means Welsh Imperial Ship, Cymru means Wales in Welsh). It's not really important for the whole of the gameplay but it gives very much flavor.

2. Nope, just the ship names in the country descriptions. Other than that the ships posses an ID so it won't influence the events or anything else.

@ Nigo: I might sound a bit anal, but I do not believe that Brazil ever used ship prefixes - ie it should just be Riachuelo rather than MRB Riachuelo.
@ VI Imre: Similarly, the Germans in World War Two / after the end of the Kaiserreich in 1918, did not use ship prefixes either - ie it should just be Bismarck rather than KMS Bismarck.

I will keep it mind. However if Germany was winner during ww2 I guess they would have built a strong Kriegsmarine and used the prefixes. On the other hand I can't remember any accasions that the Soviets used them either.

Well, that's great, I will look into it.

EDIT: Okay, I have reviewed various sources, and they say that KMS was not used by the german, it was usually given them by the western allies. I came to the conculsion that I will use prefixes for the nations that used them historically, so Germany and Brasil won't get any prefixes in the first version.

After Reviewing the CORE I belive that I will reuse as much of it as possible, that is a magnificent work. But there are still many a-historic countries that will need ship names, like England, Wales, Scotland, Federation of the West Indies etc. that could have a navy a real navy, and there are those who need a few more shipnames like Germany (by '52 I had more than 200 ships and there were no more light cruiser names.).
