Shortsword Units are unlocked via Innovation in Age 3. We avoid putting Innovation Units into upgrade lines with similar units in subsequent Ages to avoid the "feels bad" moment where you unlock the something like the Shortsword in Age 3 and in the next turn unlock the tech that upgrades the unit, in this case to the Longsword in Age 4, so that we can avoid making you feel like you wasted the Innovation opportunity.

There are some advantages in this case, like the Shortsword being much cheaper to produce than the Longsword, and we don't want players to feel like they were tricked when they could've taken the Wealth bonus instead.

First of all, thanks for your reply, and congrats for the great work you are doing in this game.

Even though I agree the avoiding the “wasted innovation “ is a good idea, I would like to add that “short sword” is an age 2 innovation, and also “longsword” are not automatically unlocked by reaching age 4, but requires research “professional army” tech. In that way, I see that “wasted innovation “rather unlikely in this case.

Furthermore, I think that every unit has to have an upgrade path. Maybe not shortsword to longsword, but in general I would rather avoid unit isolated from the upgrade path in general
